I left automatic clutch on thinking it was equivalent to the automatic
clutch in GPL.  I presumed that removing it would mean that you needed to
use manual clutch action or stall the engine.  I have GPL-like control of
the car now that I have turned it off!!!!!  Man is this a hundred times
better!!!!

If it doesn't work like auto clutch in GPL, what does it do then?

Yep, now you have to blip the throttle on your downshifts.  You don't
even do that in GPL as GPL do the bliping for you.

blip = a small movement (in this case the throttle)

hope this helps

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but you sure must blip the
throttle in GPL while downshifting.. otherwise you'll overrev and
you'll damage your engine badly..

No in GPL you must lift off the throttle while downshifting otherwise it
will over rev. Blipping refers to just lightly pressing the throttle. So for
example while downshifting in N4 you must 'blip' the throttle while the car
goes through neutral while changing a gear. The helps to keep the revs up
and I think to help prevent the rear wheels locking??? not quite sure on
that. Its basically the same theory as "double declutching" in a road car.
Or though you may hear it referred to as "Heal and Toeing" that is doing the
same except you are doing it while braking hence the name Heal and Toe as
your left foot must control the accelerator and the brake at the same time
while your right is controlling the clutch pedal. Hmm just think of the fun
when ACT-Labs introduces their clutch system and we have to do this!!

I think it is a bit like a wheel slip control thing--it is almost impossible
to spin the wheels from a standing start with it on...and it just seems
unbelievably intrusive, always doing something you don't expect with the
clutch/rpm's.  At this point, I don't care--I've got "normal" control back.
