Saw it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year, with Mr. Hall
driving. The suction is provided by two snowmobile engines, and that
noise snuffs out the growling V8 :)

Ahh, wish I was born 15 years earlier!

Yep.  Most of the Chaparral's were really beautiful, but this one was
***ugly.  But what a concept!  This car was introduced by Hall after
he had retired from actual racing - following his 1968 crash at the
season finale in Las Vegas.  I believe the sucker car was from 1970(?).
If I remember correctly, Jackie Stewart drove it for one race, and said
it was amazing - he could go WAY deeper into the corners than any car he
had ever driven.  The rest of the season, I believe Vic Elford was the
driver.  I'll check my facts tonight (in the great book "Can-Am" by Pete
Lyons, highly recommended).

The car was indeed banned when the other teams complained, led by the
McLarens. This called for the end of Chaparral in Can-Am. Later, Denny
Hulme said that getting that car banned was the biggest mistake they
ever made, because it brought an end to the spirit of Can-Am (a virtual
formula libre), and soon after the series itself disintegrated.  Denny
Hulme also called Can-Am the greatest road racing series ever.

I was lucky enough to see the races at Riverside in 1966, 1967, and
1968.  These were the years when Hall was running the first of the
winged beauties - the 2E?  Magical times.
