OT: F1 mika's plastic seal missing

Hi

I read the report that mika hakkinen's mclaren
has a black box with ONE OF THE plastic seal
missing and therefore he is subject to disqualification
by FIA.

What is this plastic seal and why is it important to have
the plastic seal ?

Did mclaren attempt to explain why the seal is missing
in the first place?

Mclaren is such a first class outfit, such a thing would not
be overlooked , My guess is they must have
done something and therefore could not replace the seal
or something...............

Thanks and regards

This is how the seal look:

The FIA places the seal on the blackbox before the race, and if it's
missing at the end of the race, then it means McLaren COULD have changed
the software inside the box. Personally I don't think McLaren
deliberately removed the seal, but if it's gone we have no way of being
sure they didn't change the software within the box...

> Hi

Hi Leong. This really isn't the right newsgroup for this. You will find
MUCH more enthusiastic "explanations" and "advice" for this kind of
questions in rec.autos.sport.f1

But I'll give you a few quick answers. Please direct any followups to
the newsgroup mentioned above.

Under investigation. The verdict of the stewards will be voiced no
earlier than July 25th and no later than July 26th.

It is there to "guarantee" that the engine mapping software has not been
changed after the official FIA pre-race inspection. With illegal
software, one could effectively map the engine for traction control for
example.

Not exactly. Just stated they don't know where the heck it has gone.

Um, do you think they, being a first class outfit, would be stupid
enough to tamper with a seal they knew would be caught missing in a post
race inspection?

No but I would also think they, being a first class organization, would know
the proper allowable dimensions of the front wing.....

hi joona

yes I know about rec.autos.sport.f1
but I found the discussion here to be
more ( believe it or not ) MATURE HERE
than there....  :-)

your post here being an excellent example.

anywhere, engine management as traction
control ???

It is a bit far fetched but FIA do have its rules.
which I hope to see applied evenly across the board
( to EVERYONE !!  )

:-)

Depends... I see nothing wrong with some passion for the sport and one's
favourite teams and drivers. If you can take the heat... :-) And if you
filter out the trolls and other goons, there are plenty of "serious"
racing and rules experts in Raz.

Why, thank you. I do indulge in the occasional silliness with the Raz
pals (and mortal enemies ;-), though.

Yup. Perfectly feasible. As the computer controls the revs anyway, it
would be quite easy to program traction control. The trick is to make it
so that it isn't obvious. But all (FIA, teams...) seem to agree it can
and has been done. Without naming any names.

Fine by me. Remember Sepang 1999... ;-)

Oh shut up :-)

FWIW, I heard that Mclaren was losing it's constructors points
for that car, but MK was going to get to keep the points towards
his championship...

Also, that above mentioned NG totally sucks. When Michael Andretti
was in F1, a co worker and I got into a "conversation" with some
individuals. It turns out these people worked less that 15 miles from
where we worked. We started getting prank phone calls and every
thing. There is nothing but a bunch of total psychos in that NG.
Yourself included apparently :-)

Oh how mature to judge the whole group by a single incident years ago. And watch
it, there are plenty of rasf1tes reading this NG.

I DO consider that as a courtesy, you know.
