I take this to mean that you are using the "Qual" and "Race" setups
unchanged from the initial install, right?  If I remember correctly, the
"Qual" and "Race" defaults are both set to "Easy" immediately after the
install.  This might be your problem, taking literally what you said, "Now
I haven't touched the setups yet" and have never gone to the setups page.

Another thing is that races early in the season are much cooler temps than
races later in the season.  And the temps/conditions change from session to
session.  Maybe a contributing factor?
