Keith,
I would spend the extra few bucks and get the Diamond Monster 3D, and
I'll tell you why. Calling a card 3d does not in fact make it a 3d card.
The Diamond uses what has become the de-facto standard chip, the 3dfx
Voodoo chipset. The Matrox card uses some goofy thing, I'm not even
going to take the time to look it up, it doesn't matter. Matrox has gone
on some weird tack in the last couple of years. In the old days, the
8meg Millinium was just about the hottest graphics card around, for the
average consumer. I think they figured that they could market anything
and sell it on their reputation. Then along came the Mystique
(pronounced Mistake), which they labeled a 3d card. Of course it wasn't,
but alot of people bought it on reputation alone. Then they decided that
wasn't selling anymore so they came out with the new M-3D. Same story,
not a true 3d card but they will sell quite a few on name alone. This
kind of business tack is one that I find offensive and I'm not going to
but another one of their products for quite awhile.
There you go Kieth, like most things in the business world, you get
what you pay for. Think of it this way, at least you didn't plop down
the hundred bucks for the Matrox first and then learn your lesson. Pay
the extra bucks and get a true 3d card, one of dozen or so available
that use the 3dfx chipset. Shop around on the web, some of 'em are
getting pretty cheap, in the hundred and thirty range. On the other
hand, you can't go wrong with the Diamond, it's a killer and they will
support it with new drivers. Don't wait for the Voodoo2, if you take
that attitude you would never upgrade, allways waiting for the next big
improvement.
Good hunting, all the best, Mike Davis
