Hello.

Forgive my ignorance in this matter, but someone could probably explain me
which is the difference between the real Indycars and Nascar. I always knew
that Nascar were a sort of stock cars, but after trying the patch posted
here few days ago I am not that sure.

Or have I done something wrong in applying the patch? The only difference I
see is a different colour for my car and the chance to choose a different
chassis/engine...

Thanks.

Indycar and Nascar are two very different racing series.  They run on (some)
different tracks, have different body styles, different rules, etc.

NASCAR (at least Winston Cup, which is the most popular Nascar series) is an
American racing series made mostly of American drivers, driving American cars,
and racing on American tracks.  Currently, the Winston Cup series features
three different car types:  Ford Thunderbird, Chevy Lumina, and Pontiac Grand
Prix.  But make no mistake.  They may _look_ like the cars you can buy from a
dealer, but they're nothing like them.  They all run V8 engines (which generate
~800 HP), and weigh around 3500 lbs.   These cars generally run on oval tracks
of different sizes (from around 0.5 miles up to 2.6 miles), but they also run
on a couple of road cources (Sears Point and Watkins Glen) during the racing
season.  The most famous track they race at is probably the Daytona
International Speedway in Daytona, Florida.  This year, the Nascar Winston Cup
cars are racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time in the
Brickyard 400.

Indycars are like the ones in the Indycar Racing game.  Lighter, more power,
differnt look, and completely different handling characteristics from the
Nascar Winston Cup cars.

No, nothing wrong.  There currently is no good NASCAR simulator game, so the
point of the Nascar patch (add-on actually, not really a patch) was just to
paint the cars like Nascar Winston Cup, and to name the drivers appropriatly.
The patch is not particularly realistic since the cars still look and act like
Indycars.

And why do I love the Nascar painted cars for ICR?  I get much more joy out of
riding Dale Earnhardt into the wall than I do Al Unser Jr. (although I enjoy
it for both.)

Later...
Steve

The "patch" is simply to simulate the appearance of NASCAR cars in the
current season.  The cars are still IndyCars, and yes, you're right,
NASCAR runs full-bodied stock cars.

Hey guys (and gals),
I am upgrading my system to vlb with a 486/66 and I was wondering
what vlb video cards work best with IndyCar. I was considering a
Diamond stealth 32 or 64 with 2 megs. Any opinions on these from
a satisfied (or dissatisfied) customer? Any opinions on other
vlb cards used? All opinions welcome and encouraged!
Thanks,

Hi...
I'm running a DX 4/100 with the Diamond Stealth 32 2mb vlb card.
I'm very happy with it....I run ICR w/ all details on and drop
no frames......    With the Tseng Labs ET4000W32p chip, things
fly..especially for the price!!!!

I've seen the game on a Pent90 w/ a ATI PCI Mach64 w/ 4MB...
fast but not any faster than on my system...now if I could only
save up enough for the T1 wheel and pedals!!!!

Darrel,

Although I have had no direct experience with{ the Diamond stealth cards, I can
say that you definately want a VL-bus card with a Tseng Labs  ET4000 chip on
it.  {_Cards with this chip are excellent DOS Video performers, and the newer
Tseng Labs ET4000{w32's have very good Windows performance as well.
Traditionally, D  video performance and Windows performance had to be balanced,
and a video card that performed excellent in Windows was a mediocre Dos
perf{_ormer, and vice versa.  The newer Tseng labs chips seem to contradict
this traditional thinking.

I myself have a Cirrus Logic 5428 VLB card.  I was going to get a card with the
Tseng Labs chips, but I found a very Incredible deal on the Cirrus Logic.  It
isn't the newest chip, but it performs well above the average for Local bus
video cards (although not as fast as the ET4000).  However, its Windows
performance is average at best{ so if you are a heavy Windows user you may want
to avoid it.

I myself didn't notice much of a speedup when I upgraded my video cards from a
16-bit Trident SVGA card to the 32-bit Cirrus Logic ca  at least in Indy Car
Racing.  The game that I have used that had the most dramatic speedup was
Doom, on that thespeed literally doubled.  I don't know.  I'm running ICR on a
DX2-66 also, and ICR runs very smoothly. Maybe that's why I don't notice a
Speedup.
