OT: What is the difference with DX7?

I installed DX7 in the hope that I would be able to select different input
devices now instead of continuously swapping between my wheel (for racing)
and joystick (for others). Although both devices are recognised as being
connected software e.g. GPL still only recognises whatever has ID1.
Is this a feature that will have to be written into games etc to allow for a
choice of input device?
What are the other benefits of DX7 supposed to be?

You know, after being basically the same architecture for, what, 19 years,
you would think the Wintel Wizzards would have fixed this annoying
problem...

That kinda sounds more like a Papyrus problem.  I'd be willing to bet
that 99.9% of all games out as of now only recognize the first input
device.  Even if Dx7 allows multiple input options, the games themselves
may not...just a hunch tho..

That was my question!  Is it the software that has to 'catch up' or are
multiple input devices still a problem for DX7? I was under the impression
that DirectInput7 was going to fix this problem as there never was a
DirectInput6.

Funnily enough my GPL now recognizes all axes of my Logi and TWO
sticks.
I'm wondering why.
