Sounds Probs on N2

by John Vozna » Thu, 07 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi:

I just built a new computer (PII 300) for a friend of mine and have a
sound problem with N2.  Everything installed correctly (so it seems) and
I ran the DOS sound install utility.  I let it auto detect the card and
I have sound in the test utility.  When I run N2 the startup screen has
some pretty cool sound, but when its finished and goes into the first
game screen HELP!!!!! it creates the most awful screeching sounds I've
ever heard...  The card is a brand new A-Trend Harmony 3DS751 PCI card
(Ensoniq ES1370 chipset).  Anybody know what I'm doing wrong or if I
need a patch or something for this card?

Thanks.

Don't autodetect your sound card. There were no PCI soundcards when
Nascar 2 was made so, naturally, it will not autodetect them. Set up
your card for Soundblaster compatibility and you will ahave good
sound. This is copied and pasted from the Nascar 2 Sound TS Guide on
Sierra's web site. Folllow the instructions.

Most Soundcards are SoundBlaster compatible in one way or another.
Usually, they will have a "BLASTER" setting in DOS. Click on START,
PROGRAMS, and MSDOSPROMPT. From the DOS prompt, you can type in "SET"
and hit enter. This will display your BLASTER= line, it will look
something like this:

Blaster=A220 I5 D1

Blaster=A240 I7 D0 T2

Blaster=A220 I7 D3 H5 P330 T6

The "A" setting is the soundcards Memory Port Address, a.k.a. "port"
or "address".

The "I" setting is the Interrupt Request, a.k.a. "IRQ"

The "D" setting is the Direct Memory Access, a.k.a. "DMA"

The "T" setting is the soundcard "Type"

1= SoundBlaster Mono

2= SoundBlaster Stereo

4= SoundBlaster Pro

6= SoundBlaster 16

The "H" setting is the High DMA setting for 16-bit Stereo sound

The "P" setting is the Music Instrument Digital Interface Port, a.k.a.
"MIDI Port" or "MIDI address"

It is assumed that if there is no "Type" setting on the "BLASTER="
environment string, the Soundcard is a SoundBlaster Pro compatible
card. Therefore a BLASTER= setting of A220 I5 D1 would be a
SoundBlaster Pro at Address 220 IRQ 5 and DMA 1.

Once you have determined your Soundcard and setting type "Exit" and
press <enter>. Try the following steps for setting up your soundcard
in NASCAR 2:

Click START, PROGRAMS, SIERRA, find NASCAR 2 SOUND SETUP. This will
take you into the sound setup utility for NASCAR 2.
Find the "SOUNDCARD" setting and choose your soundcard.
Find the "Address" setting and insert your "A" setting.
Find the "IRQ" setting and insert your "I" setting.
Find the "DMA" setting and enter your "D" setting.
Choose "TEST SOUND", then "EXIT".
Click on the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of the DOSBOX on your
screen to close the DOSBOX.
You can now start the game.

Later,
Chris
