Great new N2003 track

A word or two of praise for a version of the legendary Donington circuit
just released for N2003 roadie fans.

Find it here:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

It plays like a cross between Bridgehampton (swooping and soaring) and the
Norisring (short and furious).  It's great fun, with a nice rhythm, but
withall a very demanding "technical" track requiring great concentration.
It's easy to loop it.  A little *too* easy....

Your car will want a well-damped setup here, thanks to the many abrupt
changes in direction.  You'll spend a lot of time cranked into corners, and
very little time on full throttle; thus it's *** tires, but at least you
get to add some extra grille tape.

There are only 8 turns.  Some are fast sweepers (which demand max aero),
others quite slow (so you need mechanical grip as well).  There are
realistic elevation changes (and vertiginous vertical loadings/unloadings),
and the turns themselves are nicely asymmetrical, non-geometric, and
believably bumpy.

Overall, a great feeling of immersion.

It should make an excellent online venue.

A couple of bugs/errors mar the package, however.  First of all, the AIs are
completely unresponsive to changes in the relative speed "slider."  Left to
their own devices, they circulate in the 1:07 range (Cup cars) and behave
themselves reasonably well, except exiting McLean's Corner, where they're
dreadfully slow.  Second, assuming this Donington is based on the short
circuit rebuilt after 1977, the length as given (3.09 miles) is whack; it
ought to be 1.957 miles (even with the post-1985 reinclusion of the old
Melbourne Corner hairpin, it would still be only 2.5 miles).

A lot of the non-US track makers keep forgetting that NR2003 gives
the official track length in miles (even though the data in the .ini
is in meters).  I'm not sure what the game uses to calculate lap
speeds, however.

I love Donington.  Is the accuracy/immersion any better than his other
3 tracks?  I could never really get into them.

Unfortunately, the last time I saw Donington, Mueller was driving for Auto
Union (and "yumping" the D-Type at Melbourne Rise), the track was closely
surrounded by trees, and an MI-5 type in mechanic's coveralls was trying to
filch a Buna *** sample from Lang's Mercedes, so I can't really vouch for
its present-day accuracy.  Haven't tried CTR's Falkenberg (never liked the
track in GPL), but I liked CTR's Donington a whole lot more than their
cartoonish Leipzig (I *loved* Andre Streu's Leipzig in GPL) and their
feckless Hockenheim (which I drove in a Porsche school in the Sixties).  And
yes, this Donington is very immersive.

I didn't enjoy it that mach at all. The TA cars are a blast at tracks like
Kyalami, Road Atlanta, and LeMans, but this track was kind of tedious and
slow.

Try loading up the (long) version of Donington for F1C, and use the DTM
cars. Tremendous fun.

The full Donington in F-3000's and GTO's = one of the best simracing
experiences out there right now.

Hmmmmm The GTO's I've owned wouldn't make it one lap without flying off the
road.  But put em' in a straight line and ahhhhh.....

Nope. :-)

What has apparently happened here is that the track's auteur failed to
convert the track's metric length (3090 meters, according to the track.ini
file) to miles, instead mistakenly dividing the metric lenth by 100.  (An
easy Holmesian deduction, since 3090 meters is approximately 1.957 miles,
the track's actual length.)  Your witness...and let's stop quibbling.

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood completely.
There's another strange thing in the ini too.

[ track ]
track_name = Donington Park
track_type = 4

track type 4 is superspeedway. :-)

When racing AI, seems the spotter tells you cars are on the opposite side
than what they really are.
Is there a fix in the track.ini file or something?

Oops!  That, sir, is no quibble.  And while yer at it, you might as well add
the line:

track_dir = 0     ; Road Course

to the same stanza.

The 'fix' is pretty simple.  Just change the track ini to read roadcourse
instead of superspeedway.   Carl Ribbergaardh spotted that mistake,
Change the track type from 4 to 5(I think that is it)  And the spotter
will get smarter.
