GPL - can I race online? (3:30'ish at Spa... am I lame?)

by Hamm » Tue, 24 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I just got GPL this weekend and I'm not very good.  I have only
raced Spa so far.  My best lap is a 3:28+ in a Ferrari, but I'm
usually around 3:32 while racing.  Am I good enough to race
online? (I doubt it).

Is there a web page with hints/tips on getting online?  I have an
ISDN line (only single channel though) and a fast machine.

I saw another post here about cheaters... are people really
cheating at this sim online?  Kind of defeats the purpose of a
"sim", no??

Allison Hines, I love your web pages... thanks for doing that.
Your AI Tweaks were a god send to make the sime more fun for me,
although I'm still three seconds off Clark no matter what I do
<g>.

That's plenty fast enough, particularly for a Ferrari which isn't that
strong in the power races (Monza, Spa).

The most important thing about racing online isn't raw speed, however.
It's keeping the car on the track.  You'd be surprised how well you can
do just by avoiding trouble.  This is especially true in Realistic
Damage races (with no Shift-R).  Take it easy at the start (when your
car has cold tires) and avoid the inevitable first turn pile-up and
you're ahead of 2/3's of the field.

Check out Alison Hine's excellent GPL site and go to the Online section:

Then go to the Virtual Racers Online Connection (VROC) and have fun:

Anyone who wants to put in the effort to drive cleanly is good enough to
race online. Good enough to win online comes later... Work on clean
first, and the wins will come with time.

I raced on line at SPA even though I had only done 2 laps there. My best lap
was
4:15. I came in 5th out of 16 cars! I only spun 3 times in the whole race!

ABSOLUTELY!!!   Anybody that thinks they're too slow, as long as
you check your mirrors and move aside for someone obviously
gaining on you (or hold your line if they're close), and are
willing to learn and take a little flak from the few impatient
folks around, and are willing to learn, jump right in.  There's
enough hot shoes at VROC... IMHO we could use some aware and
willing people to fill up the grids which often go lacking a few
slots.  You'll make some blunders, but we've all been there.
