No DTR Online Championship after all

by mark_rael4.. » Sat, 08 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Even with the work of a very competent programmer/fan of DTR, we found
out today that it will not be possible to eliminate possible online
cheating in DTR, so we have cancelled our Online Championship plans
over at the Late Model Players Guide.

The problem is not people who edit the car performance using the .str
files (something Ratbag allowed, and then tried to sweep under the rug
in the patch.) The problem is with people who might manipulate track
names and the parameters of the tracks! To be honest I havent tried it
myself, but the maker of the Setup Utility for DTR says he has no
problems making 'impossible times' (and equally impossible to detect)
using this method. It was he who told me that to continue with the
Online Champ idea would be unwise, and so we arent.

That is too bad about that, esp since I hear its pretty good for online
racing.  One thing tho,  I have never actaully seen too many guys running
dirt cars on a local level there were completely rules legal.

Do you guys actualy think that there is that large of a chance that
someone will cheat in your league just for a win?  Large enough to just
kill your idea of a league?  I wouldn't think so.

No DTR Online Championship after all

It depends whats at stake.  I mean if its just a reputation and the recognition
of being a champion then i dont know that too many people will cheat.  However
one bad seed can ruin the series.  If theres prizes at stake though...I can
assure you someone will cheat.  I've been racing slotcars and R/C cars almost
my whole life and there is always someone who you know isnt legal...in other
words their cheating.  Be it a small thing like ball bearing wheel bushings or
a whole different motor with markings for one run in a "lower class" that would
be legal.

Really its not a great idea to run it.  I mean if cheating is undetectable then
you can accuse everyone who wins a race of cheating...and thats not fair cause
they might have driven just as hard to get that win.  Then to have it taken
away for cheating when they didnt...i think people would get fed up with that
very quickly.  Thats just my humble honest opinion.

   Hi Chris,
Yes I think you understand the situation quite well. What is most
important before you begin something like an Online Championship is to
identify the possible ways to cheat, and to eliminate them. Not because
the whole world is populated by mental defectives who cheat at any
chance they get, but because its proven to be the easiest and most
hassle-free way to do things. In this case, the prize for the winner is
a 'TSW2 Cup' wheel, and there are also 2nd place (and other) prizes.
One thing I have found that always spells death for Online and Offline
competitions is when possible cheating hasnt been addressed. It results
in anarchy and accusation after the first week, give or take a few
days :)

It doesnt matter to me that my DTR website is averaging 1100 hits a
day, or that some people think I have some kind of responsibility
towards DTR..  all that matters is that we get very clear on what we
have now in DTR and what might be done in the future to improve the
game in certain areas. My way of doing this is to say, "hey! we cant
run our Online Champ because people can extract and rename track names,
and the game doesnt detect it!"  I'm not here to cover my own ***or
to protect my investment!  I'm only interested in openess about this
stuff, not in good 'public relations' for the sake of the site. If
Ratbag helps us, theres a small chance the Online Championship might
still happen.

While I'm not interested in racing DTR, I can tell you from 1st hand
experience that when I raced in the ICR2 off line leagues, cheating was a
major issue. So much so that all sorts of programs were written to detect
it.

If the sim allows you to alter anything that will give you a advantage,
then some racers will do just that.
