||| 3Dfx - DO I NEED WIN 95? |||

Stupid question alert!

I'm thinking of getting a 3Dfx card (Righteous or Monster 3D). Do I NEED
Win95 to play games with it? (Still using DOS/Win 3.11 at the moment)

I realise generic Direct 3D games will need Win95, but what about games
specially written for the 3Dfx chip? I'm particularly interested in
Formula 1, GLQuake, Falcon 4, and Tombraider.

Thanks for any assistance

Julian

Hi Julian,

You don't necessarily need Win95 for the 3DFx cards.  Some of the games
written for it are DOS games and should run just fine (probably better)
without Win95.  In your list of games, however, are at least 2 that need
Win95: GLQuake and Falcon4.  Formula 1 I don't know about, but Tombraider I
know for sure will work DOS only (that's how I run it).

Honestly, I think eventually it would be a big benefit to upgrade to win95
if you get a 3dfx.  More and more games are going to either 1) be
Win95-specific in general (POD, GLQuake, Falcon4 come to mind here), or 2)
use Direct3D specifically for 3D support (Monster Truck Madness,
HyperBlade, bunch of upcoming games).  Direct3D is the easiest, if
sub-optimal, way for game companies to implement support for a wide range
of 3D cards, so I suspect we'll see more and more of them using it.  Also
the next version of Direct3D is supposed to be a lot faster, easier to
program, etc., so I think it will just get more prevalent.

Hope this helps,
John

No Windows 95 needed(happy, happy, joy, joy!!)  3dfx will work with 3dfx
dos games!
