Hmmmmm....  Can one access AOL without setting up a DUN?  If so, he may
need to create a special Dial-Up Network for accessing AOL.  Also, he
may want to try adding the following to his core.ini file:

alternate_ip_address_lookup=1

% he doesent know what to select when he gets to the multi play screen and i
% cant remember what i picked beacause mine worked just fine.

He may want to experiment with gping:
From the VROC Help section:

You can also perform the gping or gplping test described above. If
gplping does not return a majority of positive responses from a host
which you know is currently hosting a GPL practice session, this tends
to confirm that you have a poor connection to the Internet - or that the
host has a poor connection.

[example gping <IP address of host>]

Is he trying to HOST?

AOL isn't causing THAT problem.  You can host AND join from AOL.  It just runs
slow...trust me.

Yes.  AOL 4.0 sets up an interface called AOL Adapter.  Meaning the user
doesn't have to fart around with any other settings.  And, I *can* access Vroc
from AOL.  It just runs about 300-350 'pings' slower than my other connection.
I ran some benchmarks at one time... <g>
