Dual-edged sword there.  Crime *rates* have indeed been reported to be
down.  However, crime rates are dependent upon said crimes being
reported in the first place.  In this animalistic atmosphere present in
many larger communities nowadays most people understand that, except in
the most flagrant & extreme of circumstances, they'd best not even
*think* of turning someone in.  So, the reported rates are actually
artificially low.  Take the events of a couple weeks ago just a few
miles east of where I live.  In Lincoln Park, MI.  A few residents in a
senior citizen's complex finally get fed up with another resident's foul
language & make a complaint to the housing commission.  After a meeting
between the person at the heart of the matter & the complainants, he
comes back & "puts a bullet in their ass".  Three innocent women died
there.

Although I do agree society uses fear quite often to push their hidden
agendas.  Like the NRA.  Without public hysteria, there'd be no
membership dues for them to collect, which in turn pays for the higher
official's salaries.  You get the idea.

I do it all the time without any worry because I know the facts. If you do
some research into the crime rate throughout the the centuries and study
some history, even dating back to biblical times and the first civilizations
4,000 years ago, or even throughout the 5,000,000 years man has been on this
planet, you'll see that today is docile by comparison.

Yes, I'm disgusted by the guns and *** that still exists everywhere in
the world. But I also know that the "good old days" of the past are a myth.
A certain philosopher from a looooong time ago complained about the "youth
of today". His words were identical to those that you might hear come
whining out of the mouth of your local PTA mom. The difference is, his
complaints were legit.

Not saying you're wrong, but I haven't seen any statistics.  I will agree
though, that the media sensationalizes(sp?) the worst stories to get ratings.
Since *most* of them do it, I can see it being very easy to believe that crime
is up.  Out of curiousity, what city do you live in?  I live in Detroit...<G>

There are statistics for unreported crime, and they show the same decrease.
I guess they gather this information through surveys.
