Indycar Gamepad Shifting Problems

I have a Doc's Hi Tech (Super Nintendo style) game pad and I haven't been
able to come up with a set up so that I can shift gears manually.

I tried using <up> as shift up and <down> as shift down but then sometimes
I accidentally change gears when I didn't want too.

Anyone else out there using a game pad and have any suggestions?
