?I know I'm opening up the proverbial "can of worms", but what don't
?you like about NFS SE?  I have the original, don't touch it much, but
?was wondering what differences there were and if it was the same game
?with a new name.

One of the biggest differences you will find is that once you win
the tournament twice, each track will now have 3 modes:  normal, mirrored, and
rally.  The 'mirror mode' does not consist in racing the track backwards, per
se, but mirrors the turns so that what used to be a left, is now a right, etc..
These changes are just enough to render your knowledge of the track useless, and
provides a whole new challenge (effectively doubling the number of courses).
Perhaps the original poster had not discovered this welcome feature, but to my
mind, this alone makes NFS SE worth purchasing.
Another, equally notable difference is the addition of 2 new tracks,
both of which are fantastic.  Further, there are the options to race at
different times of day (read: in different light), as well new, improved music
which may now be played while racing.  Lastly, 8-player network play has been
added, the menus have been improved, the tournament format has been changed for
the better, and both Win95 *and* DOS executables are included, as is a great
joystick configuration utility.  I'm sure there are other improvements I'm
overlooking, but I think that should be a sufficient rebuttal to the unsupported
notion that NFS SE is a "lemon"...

Just to add my two cents. I also purchased NFSse for the extra two
tracks and night driving mostly. Buying it for $35 at Best Buy and after
a $15 rebate that sounded pretty reasonable (better if you sold NFS for
$25!).
Anyway, after TRYING to load NFSse I could not get past the LOAD DIRECTX
screen without having to reboot. I have Close Combat which I believe
also uses DirectX and it runs fine.

Cirrus Logic tech support is looking into it for me (driver update?)So
if you do upgrade be SURE there is a return policy!

<snip>
How does it suck......let me count the ways....

Substnatial fps loss compared to the original.

Modem HEAD to HEAD impossible to play (2 seconds per frame)

SINGLE RACE modem play so jerky that I continually bounce
from side to side like a damn pinball.

A nice 3 second lag from the time I turn my T2 wheel
to the time my car decides to actually turn.

You are FORCED to HANG UP and RECONNECT if I want to quit any race
before crossing the finish line.

All my USER tracks are now non-playable.

And there are probably more but I gave up and burned a copy of the original NFS
CD and am now back to normal.

Oh yeah - I have a NFS SE for sale - $25 takes this CD home...  email me if you
are a glutton for punishment....

Yep. No doubt about it.

Haven't tried this. But I don't doubt it.

Hmmm. Mine isn't that bad but certainly worse than the original. As
long as I disable the music (song) I get almost as good as the
original on the original tracks, but the two new ones are worse.

[other stuff deleted].

My machine is an IBM Thinkpad 760CD (P90), 24M of memory 4xCD drive.
Runs the original great, but SE just doesn't cut it.
One of the main reaosns I bought it was because of the night/day
drving touted on the box. But I'll be ***ed if I can see how to
turn it on/off in the manual or the options screens.

Anybody know how ? Or is it the Australian/NZ version just doesn't
have this feature (even though it's written on the ***ing box) ?

As well, once I get past the DirectX installation for Win95, the PC
dies and requires a power cycle.    We tried this on 2 thinkpads, same
problem.

DOS mode installation shit itself too in the same manner, until I
disable my EMM386 from loading (I since found a small note in the book
about not using emm managers !). The original didn't mind it at all.

To summarise:

1) Worse performance.
2) Can't install in Win95.
3) Difficult install in DOS.
4) No sign of day/night driving mode.
5) Race music too soft to hear when it's turned on (and at full
volume).
6) Select a song of NONE, you get no music at all even in menus.

So, all in all, a waste of $49 (aus) bucks.  And a pity, since I loved
the original.

I hope this will help you. In order to turn night and day on/off, you
must be in the track viewing mode. When in this mode, you will see
time of day at the bottom of the screen (just after number of lapes).
Just use the enter or space bar to change the time of day.
