So I guesss no one's figured a way to hack catch-up logic into this
game? It's getting really boring in all the racing modes (which, after
all, is a pretty large part of the game).

The AI is programmed exactly the opposite of the way that would make
it fun. If I get ahead early, the AI gets desperate and makes
mistakes, falling even further behind. I end up doing hotlaps by
myself. If I make a mistake or two, they take off never to be seen
again. I end up doing hotlaps by myself. This is a classic example of
how making a game realistic doesn't necessarily make it fun.

The racing is REALLY fun nd exciting on those rare occasions when
there is someone near me to race with. Too bad that only happens about
5% of the time I'm playing.

You really need to play online on the Microsoft *** zone.

I am using a 28.8 connection and having alot of fun.  I notice
no lag at all (I don't know how microsoft hides it, cause I know its
there.)

I really wish they could make an AI for racing games that would
just auto adjust to the player's skill.  This seems to work pretty well in
UT; I'm usually challenged a good bit whenever I play with aut adjust
skill.  I suck at racing games and I really don't have any incentive to
play if there's no way I'll ever be able to win a race.  I played the MM2
demo and I liked the stunt mode pretty well, but buying it is out of the
question considering I was incapable of doing at all well in the races.

Go to www.zone.com and do some online racing.
I can't even be bothered to play against the computer after running
against real people.
It actually made me much better at the game, because the race is ever
changing. I can't count the times I went from 5th to first on the last
lap because guys screwed up. Very exciting.

E-mail me. We can set up a private game and do some one-on-one races.
Very fun.

Except that it seems if 5 people are in the lobby, only one makes it.

Thanks,

Yeah, I've had NO luck actually getting into a game.  I'm on ADSL, I've had
no problems with any other games, multiplayer or otherwise, but it seems
that the Zone just craps out on me everytime I try to connect.

Doing so is pretty trivial programming-wise. It's just a design
decision.

I will try online racing before giving up on it.

Good point. I will try that tonight before deciding whether to return
the game or not.

Well I returned the game to EB today (and pre-purchased Dues Ex with
the credit). The multiplayer IS fun ... but I spent about two hours at
it last night, only about 20 minutes of which was actually playing the
game. The rest was trying to fnd a multiplayer game, trying to get
into a game without it crashing, and then doing all that again trying
to find a GOOD game.

So while I did experience a few minutes of exhilerating racing, it was
just too much work to get there. The overall experience was more
frustrating than fun. I wouldn't mind so much if the single-player
racing was fun, then I could play that when there's not a good
multiplayer game handy. But the single-player racing just isn't fun.

That's too bad. My experience with MCM2 is the complete opposite of
yours. While there are occasional problems for me, I can count on one
hand the number of times the game has crashed while entering a
multiplayer race. Actually, sometimes it blackscreens for a long time
before starting, which could cause some people to believe it crashed
when it really hasn't. Don't know if this is ping related, or what.

I'll usually play in a few different Rooms at night before finding a
good group of guys who will stay and do race after race.

I didn't buy Quake Arena because of it's online biased play, but MCM2
is the one game I would still buy if there wasn't any single player
mode at all.

THANK you! When I returned this game (within 3 days) and told the kid at EB
that I couldn't play online to save my life, he looked at me like I was an
idiot. Thanks for vindicating me!

I can understand that. I'm not saying MCM2 is a bad game, just that
without stong single-player racing there's not enough there for me
personally. That, and I have to budget for my games. So it was partly
a mater of deciding I'd have more fun with Deus Ex.

With my 28+ connection I was never able to actually get into a
game.  I tried about four times which took me a half hour or so due to the
game being closed and reopened each time you try to play.  I eventually
gave up.  Its not worth it for me to spend so long with no payoff.  Maybe
if I get DSL I will give it a try again.
