Open source products don't tend to contain spyware. Correct me if i'm
wrong, i've never seen any.

There are any number of clients to choose from, I've been using 3.2.1b CVS
experimental, and to date nobody's haxxored my PC, or stolen my bandwidth.

That's good to hear, especially in these days and times.

Spyware/Adware is something that impacts me every single day at work.  I
spend 30%+ of my support time trying to remove this dreadful garbage from
users machines, and it never seems to end.  At 2+ hours each (and even them
some end up needing a re-image), it's a tremendous waste of resources that
could be directed towards issues that _really_ need attention.

The Bill past by the Senate this week is all fluff.  Like the Can-SPAM act,
it feels like it has pressure from the Direct-Marketing-Association all over
it.

It will do nothing.  It was a waste of our tax dollars.

This is what concerns me.  Just becuase the core code is open source does
not mean any of the available clients doesn't have Spyware/Adware included
in their installers.

Smaller software writers have been selling their souls to the devil and
including this garbage in their installers lately.  It's become far worse
over the last 6 months or so.

The average users computer I clean has over 300 exploits on it.  It's a
dreadful mess.

Those of you who have not done it lately, or never at all, run CWShredder,
SpyBot and Adaware (be sure to update each after installation) and see what
you come up with.  I bet over half of you are astonished at what you find.

One other thing...

Open a cmd window (DOS Box) and type in NETSTAT.

Look at the open TCP/IP connections your system has established.  If you
can't identify them, it's likely a tunnel that a piece of Spyware has
established and you have NO idea what kind of information is being sent from
your computer.

Hmm, I tried downloading them, but apparently there isn't a Linux
version (for very good reasons, one would think ;-)...

Cheers,

Alan,
That would be terrific if you wouldn't mind!
I've been trying to download either the update or the full installer ever
since it was first posted on Blackhole and I can't get anything better than
25K per second transfer rate which usually causes the download to time-out
and fail before it finishes.

Thanks
Jay J

PS: Folks what's all this bit torrent stuff? Anyone care to provide a simple
explanation and pro's/con's of using a tool like that?

Bittorrent is like a "normal" P2P network except for the fact that
everybody connected to this torrent is ONLY taking care of THIS file, you
you get typical DL speeds of 40-45k and no disconnection problems since
there should be always AT LEAST 1 person connected on the torrent (and
fedding it).

So once again if someone from the group who has it could care to get a
torrent client and seed the file we would all have it in no time....

Thanks
