Possible new F1 game

by ///M5Bria » Mon, 12 Feb 2001 02:57:45

A software developer friend of mine is putting together a plan for a new F1
game from his own company.
Instead of going the typical F1 route of getting a liscence & no net play,
he is planning the reverse. Develope a game w/ strong net code, graphical &
physics engine. Then include an editor that allows others to design the
driver profiles, cars, schedule, tracks, etc.  The "mods" would be similiar
to what RS/OU is doing now. You must use the server's mod in order to join
the game. Just like everything else, good designers will produce better
profiles & tracks, the online players would then decide which mod to use.
This would also allow for easy conversion for different track conversions
throughout the years.
If there is an interest for this type of game, please post replies w/ your
thoughts.
Thanks,

All sounds very good. Trouble is, ideas are cheap but game development
ain't. :-(

WSC is a lot more than just talk...  Be fair to the West brothers'
investment thus far.

yes, nothing may never come of it. I guess people have to start somewhere.
They work for a software development company as is, so they have access to
the tools.
Look how fun DTRSC is, it by no means breaks ground in any area (graphics,
physics,..) well maybe price, but it is still an enjoyable game. I play
DTRSC more than GP3, it lasted 2 days & was returned.

Interest there surely is. :)
A thought would be, if you're doing editability in such a way, how
about pushing the envelope just a tad further and not limit yourself
to F1.

BTW, I'm doing a project like this too. (but not commercially, so a
little less time is being invested). It's more low-level, in that you
really have to use the Racer engine in an enduser program, which could
be F1, Stunt Car Racer or Colin McRae, whatever. Although ofcourse
this flexibility does perhaps mean that real targeted racing games
will always be better. On the other hand, the flexibility might be
very useful, I have some fun ideas with it.
