Matrox Vs Reactor Performance

by Earl Setse » Sun, 17 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Well I got the Reactor in and working and tried to get a good comparison
between the two.  I removed my Matrox Millenium (2 M) and put in the
Reactor for these tests.  My machine is a 100 MHz Pentium with 512K
normal 15 ns cache (Not pipeline), and 32 MB RAM.  Note I had only minor
difficulties getting it to run and it worked first try after I installed
the latest drivers.

VGA - As advertised the Reactor is poor (but I don't use VGA anyway)

                Matrox          Reactor
3DBench         90.9            27.0
CBench          79.2 fps        30.0 fps

SVGA - The Reactor is very competitive, better than I expected!

Airwar Bench    56.7 fps        56.2 fps   (Matrox slightly higher ~1%)
CBench (SVGA)   24.3 fps        25.2 fps   (Reactor is higher!!! ~4%)

Now for real running! I ran benchmarks in NASCAR and ICR2.
NASCAR (Multi version)  No difference in frame rate - four conditions
ICR2 (New Patch)        No difference in frame rate - four conditions
ICR2 (Rendition)        WOW! 22-24 fps full detail passing full field (in
pits), 30 fps on track with no or few cars around.  But then you've
already read about this from everyone else.

Can't wait for NASCAR2 and the NRL.  Should be great.

And thanks to Eric and the others who have supplied much of the data on
the card.  One issue, my DOS VGA is shifted way left, and I can't see
the prompt or the first couple of letters.  Is there a fix for this out
or hoped for???
