Bow down before GRE!

Bow down before GRE!

Well, having had my GPL PB for Spa sitting stubbornly at 3:20.4 for
several months, I thought maybe I should try something. So, two days
ago I downloaded GRE.

Loaded up Greger Huttu's 3:12 Eagle setup, which I'd tried before, but
didn't like. Looked at the gear ratios. "How the hell can he - and
therefore I - drive with *those* ratios?", I thought.

So, I spent approx 15 mins hacking out a quick setup. Nothing fancy,
just getting the 90% power bands more or less overlapping, putting the
redline in top down for 207 to 203, that kind of thing.

Today, I tried out this setup for the first time. First flying lap was
a low 3:22. Felt *much* more in control of the car than with Greger's
setup. Next two laps I made a mistake and crashed. Fourth lap was a
3:20.7 - looking good!

Two laps later, with *just* enough fuel left for a flyer, I didn't make
a single mistake. The car was wonderfully balanced, and the gearchanges
were at just the right place.

Result: 3:18.827   :-)))

Nate, Alison and the rest: you're absolute stars!

I second that motion.  Since I really started using GRE last weekend I
really feel that I'm getting a handle on this setup mularky.

Cheers

I have NO idea what the 207 to 203 figures mean.  MPH?  Can you actually go
that fast at Spa?  I don't seem to go much over about 193-194...

Yes, it's MPH. My setup is initially based on Greger Huttu's one with
which he did somewhere around 3:12 (you can get the setup from Schubi's
site). With my setup (based, as I say, on this) I can easily top 200
both just before Masta and at the bottom of the hill just before
Stavelot (assuming I can do Masta at around 170).

The fastest I've ever been is 208, but that was slipstreaming Clark, so
doesn't really count. In the Lotus, I don't think I've ever cracked 200
except when in the tow of another car.

You can get through Masta at 170?  I'm 10mph slower through just that turn.
I'm sure I'm also slower than you at others.  Do you have a replay you could
sent me?  I'd love to be able to get close to 3:20...

I saw a replay once of someone taking masta flat out! Yes, I mean without
lifting. I'm not kidding here!
Does anybody still have that replay? Please give me a sign.

I have a replay of Walter Woegel's 3:13.76 and I seem to remember that he
takes Masta flat. I can manage a minimum speed of 170 - sometimes, if I'm
lucky. Otherwise I spin out or die! The secret seems to be lifting slightly,
turning in "too early" so that I clip the dirt on the left and then picking
the right moment (and the right amount of lock) to turn right.

Tony Whitley
3:21 and it's my favourite/best/most visited track
But I'm getting better all the time.
Tell me, when did this game come out? I must master it soon, surely? Novice
level at least?

<snip>

Some people can do it at 180 - I'm not kidding!

If you want to see *really* fast replays (3:12 or so at Spa!), then
look at Schubi's hotlaps site at:

http://www.parc-ferme.de/fastlaps.htm

For all tracks, the top ten times have replays available to download.

On the other hand, if you particularly want *my* replay (for some
strange reason...) send me an email saying so and I'll send it along
with the relevant setup.

Oh great, just what I need; more competition. Is he Wolfgang's secret
brother or what? :)

Oh dear. My sincere apologies Wolfgang. Mind you, as your times show you to
be superhuman I guess you're above such mortal concerns as getting your name
right.
