If you can't raise Asus support online, how do you get a new board under
warranty (3 years); or did you just buy a new board?

A dead batt usually just reverts the board to the BIOS defaults (i.e., if
you make any changes, it doesn't save them); it usually doesn't prevent the
board from at least completing the POST.

Thanks Pete.  Yes, I checked all the jumpers (and reconnected the case
connectors) just to make sure.  Even if the BIOS jumper had been set to
clear, it shouldn't prevent some POST beeps.  Thus far, the board has been
quiet as a churchmouse.

AMD CPU's cook in about 2 secs flat........never EVER run an AMD without
proper cooling, if you haven't cooked your CPU it's pure luck, you can
do this with Intel CPU's but not with AMD's.......

Well, if it's a *bad* bad MoBo, then resetting the BIOS won't help, but
resetting the BIOS makes the MoBo run at "safe" settings for everything
and an a bad MoBo may be able to boot up at say 100FSB even if it won't
boot at 133/166/200, it's just a shot in the dark as you'll need to
return the MoBo anyways, but without getting it to boot it's difficult
to do any real troubleshooting

I've had plenty of RAM, MoBo's and CPU's that won't run at their
intended speed

Sid,

Thanks for the link to the nForce forum.  Found this gem amongst the FAQs:

**************
Q. My computer boots up and shuts down after a few seconds. Whats the deal?
A. This is ASUS COP (overheat protection) kicking in so you dont fry your
CPU. Be thankful that you are not out buying a new processor right now. Make
sure your heatsink is mounted correctly, there is a raised part on the
socket with the letters "socket 462" on it, there is also a notched out, or
indentation on one side of the heatsink, this notched out piece fits over
the raised area of the socket. If you put your heatsink on incorrectly the
heatsink will NOT touch the CPU core and can cause this issue. For a graphic
demonstration of how to place your heatsink on our CPU check out
TomsHardware. The top picture shows the raised part of the socket (on the
far left) and the notched out part of the heatsink (also on the far left).
**************

This seems to be what's going on, BUT as far as I can see, the heatsink IS

TomsHardware site).  Is there any way to disable the COP feature to see if
that's what's causing the prob?

P.S. This forum and some strong comments here:

http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=565 (highly recommended reading)

make it sound like the A7N8X Deluxe's SoundStorm audio is better than the
Audigy 2 CZ and the mAudio Revolution combined!  Sure wish I could hear for
myself....

Yer point is well taken, Goy, but 1. the mobo hasn't even gotten to the
POST, much less the BIOS, Windows, or any apps, so I don't think it's
running at full chat, and 2. it's not even warm to the touch.  Nonetheless,
I will securely mount the fan (a Zalman copper model that weighs more than
my lifetime penny collection) to the CPU w. Artic Silver.

Having cooked a couple of AMD cpu's I can vouch for the speed with which
the expire.  This COP thingy sounds neat but it could be interfering with
the boot process.  I wonder, have you used the included sticky adesive tape
or some Artic Silver heat goop?  Spreading too much goop is just as bad as
too little.

A7N8X starts, shuts down....

by Steve Smit » Mon, 19 Jul 2004 10:14:08

Hi Dave,

Asus has a movie on their site of a CPU expiring.  The chip (an AMD, natch)
actually gets quite hot before it smokes, but it takes longer than 30 sec.
from a cold start.  I wasn't planning to run the thing w/o a fan, but I
wanted to see if it would boot w/o it.  It wouldn't.  I have reattached the
HSF.

The thermal tape is certainly a lot easier to apply w. any precision than
the paste, but I've used the paste enuf times to be a fairly good judge.
It's not as demanding as, say, welding.

Everybody sez the paste is a lot more effective than the tape, or I would've
been using the latter in the first place.

BTW, I've never toasted a CPU (full disclosure: I haven't done any
overclocking since 1994).

A Google search of the user groups has convinced me that this "rogue COP"
phenom is common enuf that it's prolly a bad mobo, not inexperience on my
part.  Hence, I think I will take it to my local ('puta) hot rod shop and
let them handle it.  I'm getting to old for this, as they say in every buddy
flick made in the past 25 years.

A7N8X starts, shuts down....

by Steve Smit » Tue, 20 Jul 2004 06:13:24

Did I say this already?

Apologies all around! The difficulties I was experiencing with my
brand new A7NX8 DeLuxe (Asus' COP protection feature would shut down the
board within 5 sec. of the time it was started) were entirely of my own
making.

I mistakenly thought I had installed the HSF (heat sink/fan)
correctly, but nooooooo.  Actually, the first time I installed it was
right...but it was on a bad CPU. When I installed the 2nd CPU, I
inadvertently rotated the base of the heat sink 180 deg., so that it was
resting on the step-up shown on the left side of this picture:

Once I got it turned the right way 'round, the board fired right up.

      Doh!

      I'm so ashamed....

Anyway, thanks one & all fer all yer help.  And for persisting w. what
ultimately emerged as the proper solution to my "problem."
