A7N8X starts, shuts down....

Need some help here.

Building a new rig.  Got an Athlon 2700+ from a friend, bought an Asus A7N8X
Deluxe mobo to go with it.  Installed the chip, a vid card (nVid 5200
Ultra), and 2 sticks of Corsair 3200 RAM, Antec 350W PSU, went to boot it
up...no joy.  Nada-zilch-fogeddaboudit; not even a vid card sign on splash
screen.  (PSU powered up the fans and the PSU LED.)

Swapped out all the components except the CPU and the mobo; everything else
works fine.  Bought another chip (Athlon XP 3000+), plugged it in.  Now the
PSU comes on for abt. 5 sec., then shuts down.  Still no GPU sign-on screen.
WTF?

What am I doing wrong?  I must've built a dozen 'putas by now, and I've
never seen anything like THIS.

Anybody got any ideas?

This is a quick reply......without having time to check my notes and
confirm.....sorry I'm late getting out to the track.

But......

Sounds like a ram problem.  Is the Corsair ram rated for that mobo?  Some
Corsair sticks won't work in it (even though the ASUS site says they
will....don't believe it.....check their boards for what will and will not
work).  I have two of these mobo's by the way (with Corsair ram in both, but
not the kind you are using).  Do you have them in the correct slots?  You
have to have them in #2 and #3 (not #1) for some reason...but can't remember
it right at this moment, without checking my install notes.

Achim Trensz......fairly regular on here, knows these mobo's backwards and
forward.  Try making a post to him or email him direction at:

Sorry I can't be more specific or helpful.....but hopefully this will get
you started down the right path of discovery.  Achim knows his stuff on
these boards.....he'll have you up and running quickly, I bet you!

Tom

Do you have a slow speed fan on the Heat Sink ? The board may be shutting
down because it cannot read the fan signal on the CPU1 fan header. You can
press a key, insert maybe ? don't remember which, to bypass this, then turn
it off in the BIOS. Asus's website should have the details for this

Thanks, Tom, I'll check it out (I can steal 2 sticks of PC3200 RAM from my
FragBox).

Thanks, KH.  I did check the fan connections at one point, but I can't
remember under what circumstances.  Will try again.

Sounds like a bad MoBo to me......it happens :/, what you can do is
reset the BIOS, either by using the reset jumper, if it has one, I can't
remember, or removing the BIOS battery and unplug it from the power
chord, usually takes a few hours so you might want to let it sit
overnight

Goy,

If it's a bad mobo, what's the point of resetting the BIOS?  I've never had
the mobo in operation, so I don't know what the BIOS settings are...but I
can't see that it makes much difference if I can't even get as far as the
BIOS.

A7N8X starts, shuts down....

Hi again Tom,

According to the Asus Website, the A7N8X Deluxe wants Corsair CMX512-3200C
RAM...which is exactly what was in there.  Nonetheless, I "borrowed" 2
sticks of RAM from the Fragbox.  No joy.  Same thing: fans would spool up,
but 5 sec. later, the mobo would shut itself off.

...and KingsHead,

I made damn sure the CPU fan was hooked up to the appropriate header.  It
is.

I can't follow your suggestion to hold down the DEL key during boot-up to
access the BIOS 'cuz it doesn't boot.  No vid-card sign-on, no nuthin.  Just
5 sec. of fan activity, then silence.  And a very dark screen.

I will try clearing the BIOS, as per Goy's suggestion.  I don't think the
PSU (brand new) is the prob, but I will put the DMM on it and see if its
producing appropriate voltages.

Thanks again, guys.

A7N8X starts, shuts down....

Steve, I have to agree with Goy on this one. The first A7N8X Deluxe I
purchased was DOA, as was the one a buddy of mine got too. After multiple
attempts to reset the bios with no luck (the board wouldn't even post), I
returned the board for another one and it booted up immediately.
I've spent a fair amount of time on the amdmb forums and it seems as though
Asus has had a bit of a quality control problem for a while now soooooo...
don't beat your head against the wall for too long trying to get it to boot.
If resetting the bios doesn't help you may just have to grab yourself
another board and try again. Oh, and trying to get e-mail support from Asus
is paramount to trying to push a rope up hill...Good luck, you'll need it.
lol

Steve do you have the power switch jumper from the case frontpanel to the
mobo power pins?  You cant use a regular jumper or it will shutdown as you
describe after a short period.  If I dont have the mobo in a case then leave
the jumper off and use a screwdriver or something similar to momentarily
short the pins to fire it up.

One other note is that AMD CPU's are notoriously fragile when mounting the
heatsink/fan.  Take a close look at the CPU and be sure you havent damaged
it.

If it were memory then the mobo should make some beeping noises.  As
others have said, its either the mobo or perhaps its earthing somewhere.
You have checked the bios jumper on the mobo to make sure its not set to
clear cmos.

A7N8X starts, shuts down....

by Steve Smit » Mon, 19 Jul 2004 01:21:21

Mitch,

Yes, it's in a case (Antec), and the power switch (when pushed) does start
the PSU.  If I take out the CPU and turn it on (in which case it does NOT
shut down in a coupla sec.), the power switch will turn it off when held in
for 4-5 sec., as it's supposed to, otherwise I might suspect the switch was
shorted out.  I may try yer screwdriver trick just to make sure.

At first, I had the sink & fan mounted on the CPU, since I wasn't
anticipating any trouble.  With all the troubleshooting, I dismounted the
sink/fan from the CPU and have left it plugged in but upside down next to
the CPU, assuming that the CPU won't overheat in 30-60 sec.  When, as, and
if I ever get it to boot as far as the vid sign-on and BIOS, I will shut it
down and remount it on the CPU.
