On-line racing - does it happen?

I've not seen mushc dicussion on here about on line racing
(or if there is - I must have missed it , sorry)

Is there much of a community out there doing this? (In a
similar way to Quake did (does?) , for example)

If so:
- which games make for a good network game
- what kind of modem would be recommended
- where are the servers located

thanks

There are two kinds of online sims.  The mass-market types that are on
MSN(Monster Truck Madness 2--MotoX Madness 1&2 etc) and then the smaller
but possibly more realistic online groups that race GPL and Nascar3.
The first poster gave info about VROC which will make your GPL racing
simple and fairly reliable, and then the latest patch for N3 enables a
very similar online option.
When I say smaller, that is not a bad thing.  On many nights over a
thousand users can be found racing N3 and often a hundred or so
dedicated GPL users will be online.  There are plenty of leagues for
both sims.

I tried online racing for the first time the other night with NFS:PU.
LOTS of fun at earacing.com.  Are there other similar servers set up
(as opposed to the "free matchmaking?"
