Can someone tell me why the computer cars always are just taking 1 lap
and then pitting again during practice and warmup?

Not only does it prevent you from seeing how you match up against them,
but it's very hazardous with cars pitting all the time.

That's the famous re-started race bug. If you've done one track and moved on
to a new one without restarting the game completely, this happens. Don't
know if it's been addressed in the various patches. Solution is to
completely restart N3.
