GPL- please help i want to play!

by atschoo » Thu, 14 Jan 1999 04:00:00

i can only play for about 3min before it locks up. if there is any one out
ther with a similar system could you give me some help please.

specs:
asus p2b mb (440bx)
intel p2 400
128 pc100 sdram
seagate 9.1 medalist pro
ATI all-in-wonder pro 8mb agp
diamond monster 3dII 8mb pci
creative dvd dxr2 (has a mpeg card)
sb live value (its pci)
ms sidwinder force feedback pro
win 98 (currently directx 5, 6 did not work)

now my video goes ati-monster-dvd card-monitor. this is all new to me (never
had an accelerator before, my old video card was a trident 9440 1mb upgraded
to 2mb) but i am learning all about 3dfx the hard (only?) way. i tried the
glide 2.54 with the reference glide2x.dll in gpl and still locks up. when it
locks the screen stops but the sound is still operative, i can still blip
throttle and stuff. or display goes all scattered. both ways ctrl-alt-delete
will get me back to win but must restart windows.

with win98 (fresh install)  and dx6 new drivers for all hardware i only got
into the car once.  it always locked up before i could get there, when gpl
started i had a glitch around the mouse cursor at its location on the first
screen. new install of win98 striped the dx6 and installed dx5 glide2.43 (i
think) and reference in gpl i can play for 2-5 min then crash sometimes in
10 sec. often a coplete lock must hit reset.

can you be the one to help me here. people are saying no problems with dx6
or win 98? but this is a all new machine all new drivers and i bought gpl
before i had even picked this puter out. i realy want to get some time into
this game. if i could get it to work i would buy a wheel. i have been trying
for 2 weeks now and it was only last night that i made this much progress.
my next step is win 95osr2 but i am not sure if this will help. i have tried
the diamond drivers and the 3dfx (both dx5 and 6).

this is the full version but i have a demo that does the exact same thing.
please excuse the spelling and grammar i have been at this for over 24hours
straight.
any and all help is much appreciated.
oh ya hello everyone i am new to this group. i asked for some help at
alt.games.3dfx a week ago and  no one said squat until today some one
(YenRobson) e-mailed me and  pointed me here. (thanx)

Switch back to the 203 diamond monster drivers.  That will fix it.

I've tried different drivers and still have the same problem. The solution
was to decrease the speed of my Diamond Monster to its minimum settings
90mhz I think). I did this by accessing the Voodoo properties box/advanced
settings (right click on the desk top and then click on properties). Since
then, no lock ups and I notice no difference in frame rate. Please let me
know if this works.

If you haven't already done so, take a look at the forum at
http://gpl.gamestats.com - it goes back about a month and there are very
many posts regarding lockups and Voodoo2 problems.

BTW, I have no problems with Win98, DX6 core, and Diamond Monster 8MB Voodoo
2 with:
- the latest drivers from Diamond's site (M3DII205.EXE download containing
glide2x.dll version 2.54)
- glide2x.dll version 2.53 in the gpl directory
- "Don't sync to monitor refresh" checked
- speed set to 92 MHz (you might want to try reducing the speed to 90 MHz)

Without the 2.53 version of glide2x.dll in the gpl directory, the game would
run fine offline, but lock up when hosting online races.

Good luck,
Brian

The cause may be your screensaver activating, check the time settings for it
and if it corresponds to the lockups then that is probably the culprit. Try
turning the time up , or even better turn the screensaver off completely.
I am using Win 98 and direct x 6 (except for the dx5 glide drivers ) and
have no lockup problems

ok everyone that is haveing problems this should solve them. a fan.
Jason Ronald Crooks emailed me (thanx) with the sugestion of some cooling
and it worked perfectly. since then i have reinstaled dx6 plus the new
drivers and it still works perfect. i took one old pentium size cpu fan and
held it up with paper clips. plus a fan from an old power supply. and it is
yet to lock up on me. my monster 2 is about 1mm away from my ati and i guess
that was realy trapping in the heat. i can max out all of the detail
settings and still run 36 fps 95% of the time. this game kicks ass! i was
driving in monaco with a engin fire! looks great, ai is incredible, hard as
hell. the best sim yet.

I have a DOS box backup (using Xcopy32) which runs of the System Agent
scheduler.  If I forget about disabling it, when it starts it
guarentees to lock up the system.

My only way out is then to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get the task list and kill
the program (I forget its exact name - "papy" or similar).  Once that
has happened I get back to the desktop and then need to repeat the 3
figured salute in order to kill of "gpl" (which appears from nowhere
at this point).  You get a task not responding and select end task.
You can then start racing again - but you loose all that happened up
to that point:-(
