V5 LOD

V5 LOD

I have messed with the LOD(level of detail) settings but really
haven't noticed much difference in most programs.
UNTIL I tried N4.  If ever  a program
was made to show off the LOD differences, it's N4.  I had
LOD turned way low for speed.  I started with the N4 cars
and low detailin the N4 graphic options,
and of course, the cars looked blury.  Well I
upped the detail to medium and then high and STILL the cars
looked fuzzy.  Until I remembered the LOD slider.  I moved
it to the other side of zero and immeadiately the cars graphics
sharpened right up.  Not too much of a hit frame-rate wise
either.

Thx for that one. I was wondering why the cars in N4 were blurry.
Thought it was a feature.

Only shows how "ignorant" some people are when it comes to
setting up their expensive hardware, when such old news still
get them e***d. :-)

Yea well, some of us don't want to be bothered with ***ing around
with various options every time we want to play a different game. I
just leave mine stock and change only the FSAA settings.

And some of us have bought our first Voodoo card in the last month,
so it's all news to us.  :)

The exitment about the LOD setting is just like someone coming here
screaming "wow, I just noticed that I have a manual transmission and
can increase my lap times by shifting up and down!".

Nope, the cars in N4 shouldn't look that blurry on a V5 with the
default settings to begin with. They don't in N3. Screwing with the
settings is for geeks.

Is that supposed to be an insult or a compliment? :)

Welcome to GEEK CENTRAL Jagg!   My point was...
Most of my other games didn't appear to either benefit
or detract from the use of the LOD slider.  But N4
makes very clear what the slider does and how it
affects the graphics.  Not ..."oooooh loookee a new
slider to play with..."  :)
have fun

I'm just giving Jan some counterpoint. I've done lots of geeky
tweaking in my day. I've actually played with all the settings in
the V5 control panel and have actually read the tweaking FAQ. LOD
affects the mipmap quality. Still, I shouldn't have to do that in N4
because a setting of 0 is supposed to be optimal.

Actually, it's supposed to be the optimal compromise between
performance and visual quality (or at least what the 3dfx engineers
considered to be a good compromise).

That's what I mean. I've never found adjusting it has been of any
great benefit in any other games so that's why I have always just left
it at default.

I think a setting of at least 1.0 improves the visuals in just about
every game. I usually run it at 1.75 though, where it just starts to
influence performance.
