Nascar 2 Screenshots - Very Nice!

I haven't been following this group close enough to know if these shots
of Nascar 2 are common knowledge or not, but it was news to me!  Check
out:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Go to the "News" for June 11th and locate the article on "Sierra's
Nascar 2..." (god, I shutter every time I see their name in front of
Papyrus' product).  Follow it to the Nascar 2 screenshots.

The***pit art has been redone to make the interior look a bit more
realistic; among other things, the digital speedometer has been removed.
There's also a shot of the new multiplayer screen with options for
modem, direct connect, network, and the NRL.  I know these options were
expected, but it's awesome to actually see them implemented!  The
biggest surpise was the inclusion of windshield glare!  There's a wicked
shot of the sun rising from behind a building creating a blinding
glare...very cool!  Way to go Papyrus!

And do you still need a Pentium 500 (a future computer) in order to
work correctly with SVGA and all details on, like the first NASCAR
RACING?????

I'm not sure I want glare on my windshield...
I know... it makes it a better simulation....

And if I get a couple of heating pads and turn them on high and dress
in a fireproof suit, and wear a helmet, and ... and ... and ... it
will be an even more realistic simulation.

The URL to get to the screen shots above directly is:

There is no need to go to a welcome screen, select news, select this,
select that, ...  to get to the item of interest to the newsgroup.

If the "glare" shot is not a fake, I see a problem. The spots and circles
look similar to what a camera would pick up instead of what a human eye
would see. I don't know about you but I have never seen rings and circles
while driving into a glaring sun. Other than this, I think the glare
effect looks good.

I wonder if we will be able to tape the windshield when we pit so that we
can cut the direct sunlight on the face. If the sun actually sets during
the race, we could take it off on the following stop.

'course not. It'll use the ICR2 engine, hopefully with some more minor
improvements, and that certainly runs better.

They made significant optimizations in the ICR2 graphics engine for the
Pentium and I expect we'll see even more for NASCAR 2. Also, according to
rumor, if you have a graphics board based on the Rendition 3D chip, you
will be able to run with all detail on and still get decent frame rates
with any Pentium-based machine.

I'm glad someone else thought that and not just me. Even given that
there's a windscreen there, it wouldn't refract light in that manner.
OTOH, that COULD have been a shot from the in-car camera, which would
then be quite authentic (I think it's in the wrong place for in-car
cam).

Mind you, if you start putting in "real time authentic light ray
tracing" and "authentic indices of refraction", expect <1fps! I'll
settle for playability.

Cheers!

U.S. Navy Fighters (a flight sim) had a nice sun-glare feature.  When
you were headed straight for the sun, everything turned white.  It was
VERY realistic.

I could fix this!  Put me in the back seat with a ball-peen hammer!
It would be like a night race... You'd see stars. (vbg)

What I want to know is will the sun actually move during a race, or will
it just stay in the same place through the entire race, blinding you
the same on the first lap, as the 200th?
