RASCAR Sears Point - stupid track...

Despite a wierd start (I qualled 6th, guy in front of me stopped on the
track at the start and I half-spun him, losing myself and everyone behind me
several places), it was a good race.  Ran a 17-lap race earlier and lost 3rd
gear, so I was very happy to finish in 4th with no damage!  Don't know what
happened to Jan, we had some good racing earlier but he was faster than me
and took off into the distance, all of a sudden I passed him going very
slow, didn't look like he had damage.  Apologies to the guy I punted during
the race, all my fault.

I seriously doubt that it was your fault. I (joon li) just couldn't get the
hang of the track. Thought maybe I would improve after the practice session
cause I ran a lap 2 sec faster than my best. First lap or two I went into a
wall, bent my hood up. The whole race was a struggle to stay on the track.
Finished six laps down, and felt grateful for that....

I thought Papyrus coded the Pace Car logic so that people would be used to that. :)

What is the right way to do that at a road course?

I stopped at the places where there were a patch of asphalt outside the
white or yellow line, or drove slow in the hairpin. Worked fine. On a track
like this, where the field is spread out by at least 10 seconds, noone
caught me up while I was stopping and letting a couple cars by.

Make it obvious what you're going to do before you do it.  Don't
surprise the faster driver by doing something completely unexpected.
Here are the rules I follow in that situation (no matter what track I'm
at).

1) If you're way off the pace or know you're close to going (or have
already gone) a lap down, turn on your F2 display and hit the space bar
so you can see running intervals between you and the cars behind you.
This display also shows you the cars immediately in front of and behind
you, including their current running order.

  A) Cars that are on the same lap as you show up as white
text, and it's usually okay to race with them.

  B) Cars that one or more laps ahead of you show up as RED,
so stay out of their way.  If you see a bunch of red
cars BEHIND you with intervals that are getting smaller,
be prepared to allow them to pass you at some point.

  C) Cars that are a lap or more behind you show up as green.

  D) You show up as yellow text right in the middle of the display.

2) Do not slow suddenly while still in the preferred driving line.
Maintain control of your car and slow in an appropriate place.

3) It's not just up to you to allow a faster car to pass safely, it's
MORE important that the faster car executes the pass safely.  If the
driver is too impatient, he'll push the issue and end up wrecking both
of you.  Make sure it's his fault and not yours.

4) Be ready to allow more than one car to pass you.  Many times, leaders
are in packs of cars, and they all are racing for position while trying
to lap you at the same time. Don't***the next guy because you think
one is enough.  You're already a lap down, so letting the 2nd, 3rd and
4th place car is probably NOT going to hurt your race any more than it
already is.

5) Use your head and be courteous. If there's any doubt who was at
fault, save your replay.  If you***up, be nice and apologize once
after the race.  If the guy you wrecked continues to be an *** about
it, return the favor (in chat, not on the track).

>Eldred,

>HALF the field was 6 laps or more down.  You should not have left!

Like I said, I couldn't even put 2 clean laps together.  That would NOT have
been fun...  If it had been for points, I would have at least attempted it.
Since it wasn't, it would have been a waste of time.

Oddly, 2nd didn't go away when I was using it.  It decided to check out on
the Front Straight...

It was fine coming out of turn 11.  It just decided to go away in turn 3, or
whatever the hell that first right-hander is after the little snake after
the front straight.

And I tend to lift a bit when upshifting at road courses to prevent the car
unsettling from the lurch.  I got enough problems without the car lurching
:)

It was weird.  What can I say :)

My transmission died after just eight laps or so. Wasn't driving any
differently than usual.
