I bought MGPRS2 from EB in Telford at the weekend for ten quid. It's
really surprisingly good. You'll need to download the
(unofficial) patches for the real 2000 drivers and cars to replace
the made-up ones that come with it (it didn't have an FIA licence),
though for some reason I can't get the Minardis to work properly.
It runs like a dream on even an average PC (on my 64 meg Celeron 400,
I can turn everything up to maximum with no slowdown/jerkiness at
all), and is most definitely a sim rather than an arcade game. Put it
this way: MGPRS2's "Easy" mode is considerably harder than (say) F1
'97's "Grand Prix" mode. The only really "Easy" thing is that you're
the fastest car in the race.
There are a *lot* of setup options in its "realistic mode", and you
can set all manner of regulations (how many other games have an
option to limit the number of tyres used in free practice?). In the
garage, you can do all the normal things - tyres, fuel, shock
absorbers, suspension, wing angle, etc etc etc.
The handling is nice - it's *hard*, and a good setup makes a very
noticeable difference. When I first tried it, I'd just come off a
longish GPL session, and was trying to do four-wheel drift. *Big*
mistake - I was in every gravel trap going. The force feedback is
fairly primitive, though you do get a nice jolt when you change gear.
So, do I recommend it? Yes. It's great value.
