Nascar 1999 Latest Version ?????

by Rich Heimli » Mon, 05 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I just recently re-installed Nascar Racing 1999 Edition and I'm wondering about
the current version. My readme suggests I have the 1.0 version. When I go to
Sierra's site, it's quite confusing. They show a patch for Nascar and one for
Nascar 2 but nothing noted specifically for the 1999 Edition. Is there a more
current version? If so, where is it? I know 1999 was based on Nascar 2 but there
was a Nascar (1).

I also want to find out where I can race against others (i'm not that good but
would still like to try) and where I can find the best files for producing a
complete calendar and track sets. All the web searching I did still came up
empty for the obvious tracks like Daytona. I also have installed the new body
type floating out there and the current SR1999 series (very nice).

Lastly, what ability percentage do the better drivers set the computer drivers
for? I started with mine at 85% and hour-by-hour moved it up as I got
re-acclimated. I'm now at 96% and still winning most of the time.

Oh, is there anything else utility or update wise I should really have?

It depends a lot on the track (and your skill at setups).  As
a general rule of thumb 100% is OK, but, at 100%,  the AI are easy at,
for example, Talledega, and absurdly fast at, for example, C***te.

bob (not one of the better drivers)

Currently, there is no patch for NR1999, and I don't know if Sierra or
Papyrus will ever release one.

Check out Racing Design, http://racdesign.smarthosting.com/ They have
a bunch of stuffs for NR99, like wall removal patches for certain
tracks, AI patches, etc.  Also check out
http://www.public.usit.net/stempty/  for links to other goodies.

They are releasing a patch for NR 1999 this fall. It will add support for
Direct 3D, Force Feedback, improved AI and Internet Multiplayer capability.
Unfortunately they will be releasing it under a new name (Nascar 3) and
charging us for it.

That's fine. So far is seems basically stable and dependable.

Wall REMOVAL patches??? Okay... I'll have to find out what that is and why I'd
want it though <grin>.

That's okay with me. It's the way business works. Look at companies like Corel.
They release a new version of their core products once every year and live off
the sales of it until the new version comes out the following year. The
differences between products each year is generally minimal and updates for it
are nearly $300.

Then you have EA putting out Synchronized Swimming '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, '99,
2000, etc. Why should Sierra be any different? If a product doesn't live up to
your expectations, by all means exersize your displeasure where it counts.
Return it. Don't hope for goodwill from a company, driven by a need for new
product sales each year, to add major feature changes to any product after it
ships. This happens maybe once out of every thousand products.

That said, I too am disappointed in Sierra's lackluster support of force
feedback. Even where they have supported it, it's been a) problematic and b) a
poor effort. On their side, percentage wise so few own FF devices that the drive
isn't there. More direct is the issue that Papyrus is very much a smaller
developer regardless of Sierra's backing. They are very much like a NovaLogic.
They put out product that has an incredible core engine but lacks a lot of the
polish of products from the bigger developers. Papyrus simply has had trouble
dealing with new technologies and putting out a user interface that really
works. GPL is their first step forward in this regard.

I want N3 to include everything everyone talks about but also want it to have an
intuitive interface that is complete. I can't believe that in NR1999, they have
no facility for assigning functions to advanced joystick buttons. Sure, I can
use the utility that comes with my joystick, but that's a hassle and then it
often has to be manually enabled and disabled with each game.

Removes the pit walls at tracks that don't have them.  Keeps you
from hitting them. :-)

This of course raises the question of why Papyrus added them in the first place.

To prevent people from cheating by leaving the pitstall, cutting
across the grass and onto the track, rather than crawling along on the
pit road.  It wouldn't be fair to the AI cars that you can cut your
pitstop time like that while they can't.  ;)

sounds like jeff gordon...
:)
("it's AIR, Jack- AIR!" - remember that?)

scrape
against the wall down a straightaway with no damage to them;  I watch them
pit
when the spotter specifically says "pit road is closed" so they won't go a
lap
down....  and I bet my bottom dollar that they have treated their tires with
some sort of compound that give them better wear!!!
