I dunno about CART, but NASCAR uses Nitrogen in their tires because it is
more stable pressure-wise throughout the range of temperatures the tire
undergoes.

Nitrogen is correct. Normal air does act strange, just check your road car
in the evening and in th middle of the day :-)

The correct answer is Nitrogen, because it is inert, which means it is
stable (does not contain moisture, nor any other contaminants) and,
therefore, is a stable substance. Sort of like the difference between
using tap water versus distilled water in your lead-acid battery.
