I agree, to a point. Work needs to be done to the walls at the super
speedways. If you hit a solid, unmovable object at 150 MPH, at the
wrong angle, you can be killed. We need to have energy absorbtion
walls, that will, along with the cars, absorb a good percentage of the
energy.

I have heard of people working on this concept, but we have not seen
any improvments yet. Maybe soon.

I saw a NASCAR Truck race last year that was on a short track that had
problems with people hitting the wall hard (basically, the same type of
problem as with IMS...something about the track made things bad when you
lost the vehicle).  What the owner did was get big Styrofoam blocks and
put them in the corner.  A truck would lose it, slam into the blocks
(nice explosion of Styrofoam...:-), and take a lot less damage.  Clean up
was easy...replace the block, blow the Styrofoam off the track, and the
race continued.  You might be able to do something the same although you
might have to increase the track width to handle it (although it would
slow things down since you don't have the room).

Gary.

I figured this thread would be dead by now, but since it isn't, I'm gonna
add one thing.  I think we can all see by the races on Sunday, that
neither the IRL or CART are better, Although I did see plenty of "rookie"
mistakes at Indy, between Michigan and Indianapolis, the majority of the
accident's were caused by veteran's.   I have realized a few things over
the past weekend.  I appreciate what Tony George is doing for racing,
ie... Taking racing back to the way it used to be, with the drivers
winning, not the cars or teams.  But it has to be done in a safer manner,
which hopefully will be accomplished next season with the new rules.  I
just hope that with the new IRL chassis and slower speeds comes the end of
the IRL vs. CART fued. You must just realize that they are two diferent
series, and will be for years to come, (gotta add this, I think that Tony
George is the reason that these two series will never reach an
agreement... Tony George is going to change the specs on indycar, so they
won't get back together.  That's it for me for now, talk to ya later.  One
last thing, why will the US 500 be run somewhere else next year?  Why not
just keep running it at Michigan?   being held in California next year,
anyone know what's happening?

My guess is it gives Penske another race at his new Cal. track, and
more cash in his pocket (like he needs more).
