I saw a NASCAR Truck race last year that was on a short track that had
problems with people hitting the wall hard (basically, the same type of
problem as with IMS...something about the track made things bad when you
lost the vehicle). What the owner did was get big Styrofoam blocks and
put them in the corner. A truck would lose it, slam into the blocks
(nice explosion of Styrofoam...:-), and take a lot less damage. Clean up
was easy...replace the block, blow the Styrofoam off the track, and the
race continued. You might be able to do something the same although you
might have to increase the track width to handle it (although it would
slow things down since you don't have the room).
