One flaw I'd heard about which you didn't mention is that your monitor
MUST be set to 256 colors in order for the program to run.  Can you
confirm this?

GP manager bugs !

Its really sad to see a game with such a great potential only some flaws coming to
ruin that.

- The game seems to calculate the weights of the cars wrong. For example if I add a new
part to my car the weight of it doesnt add up correctly.

- Negotiating for new drivers sucks sometimes. Sometimes when I hire a new driver I get
an extra one with him. Its really annoying to hire M.Schumacher and find out that you
have also hired T.Inoue to drive after Schumachers contract ends. It seems that the
other team has negotiated for the replacement and now its given to me.

- Why the hell is it that sometimes when I decide to manage qualifying myself my
drivers are some 10 secs off the pace and when I decide to pass it and let the computer
do it for me they are only 1-2 secs. off the pace and all this with exatly SAME setups.
By the way the drivers should give some tips or comments for their car setups like in
real life.

- The drivers have far too little to do with the outcome of races. Drivers are just too
equal in races. It seems quite OK with qualifying but the race results are highly
unbelievable sometimes. Its interesting to find out that there is even less overtaking
in the game than there are in real GPs and the race order after first lap is far too
often the same as grid order and everybody knows this isnt the case in real life.

- The manual should be much bigger and better. There are far too many things and
details in the game to which you cant find answers from the manual.

..After all this whining I has to say this is a good game but it needs some serious
updating to become a great one.

Comments anyone ?

One more thing that really irritates me is that when you acquire other teams car blue prints
you notice that they are sometimes using illegal technology in their car for example skirts in
the early part of the game. Then when you deside to put skirts on the car you get disqualified
immediately. FIA seems to check only human players cars.

Well put Ville, I agree with everything you have said in this and
the last post. It seems such a shame that the overiding impression
that this game leaves you with is of something with bugs, and
annoying traits, rather than the damn good Sim which it actually
is hidden under there.

I agree with and endorse the opinions expressed by the authors in the
preceeding articles. Here is another quibble to add to the list-

It is not possible for the human player to contract an existing
driver to come back again next season. Other teams can have a
driver in the team and on the 'next driver' list. If the human
player tries to contract an existing driver, all it achieves is
        replacing the exisiting contract! WHY???

GP manager bugs !

by LARS ANDERS » Sun, 07 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi. After playing GPM for a couple of days I have discovered a
*lot* of bugs. Or undocumented features (since the manual is so
slim).

VK> ..After all this whining I has to say this is a good game but
VK> it needs some ser ious updating to become a great one.

You are not the only one to whine about this game. But even though
I whine, I still like it *a lot*. What keeps me playing is the
potential of the game. What really bugs me is most of the bugs are
so obvious !

I can only translate that into thinking that Microprose must take
us for idiots when they dare to release such a buggy piece of
software. Christmas sales or not !

VK> Comments anyone ?

Plenty :) What really needs to be done is to compile a bug list
and mail it to Microprose, in the faint hope that they would use
it.

The most obvious bugs I have found (after only two days):

Generally:

1. Windtunnel testing is bogus. Changing wingsettings or even
wings does change reported speeds in mysterious ways. Examples :

frontwing   rearwing    Topline speed   Cornering speed

   45          45             200              199
   90          90             200              190
   10          10             200              190
    0           0             175              165

2. When doing track testing, laptimes are only affected by serious
changes in wings. I usually let the driver do 5+ laps. He could
have a bad lap ?

3. All the superlatives in this game really bothers me. Superb,
excellent fair, average, good, very good, high, briliant.

I want a legend to tell me what outranks what. And I want more
consistencies in how everything is ranked. Ie. drivers are ranked
with ten different superlatives, while your tire- and
partscontractors are ranked by another system (which is ok) but
what is better than what ??

4. All the part about testing a car. I need a way of telling me if
the car is handling ok. If it is my driver that is going slow, or
the setup that is not working properly. I want a way of telling if
this part is really any better than another part. Thats why I pay
those big bucks to my ace R&D and Engineer guys.

5. All those assistants. Mechanic R&D, Engineers and marketing
people. Is it better to hire cheap and lacy or expensive and
experienced ??  I need a measurement to make a decision here.

Qualifying :

5. Your drivers disappearing without you knowing what has
happened. I saw Damon Hill _blow up_ during a session, and never
found out why. He still had lots of tire and fuel left but he just
went reported as (R)etired ?!??

5. Drivers following close, but reporting very different laptimes.

Race :

6. What on earth does "XX driving hard" means ?

(XX being a driver name :))

7. Messages being passed to drivers that retired 48 laps earlier.

8. The dutch are going to love this <g> : In my first race Jos
Verstappen won in a Simtek-Ford, with Bertrand Gachot in second
place. Both my drivers Hill & Coulthard retired. (Hill actually
crashed into Jean Alesi. Wont he ever learn .... <g> )

I mean ..... this must be a fault somewhere. Right ?!??

My conclusion :

The game needs to give more and better data in order for me to
make the right decisions regarding all apects of the game.

And we need a new manual as well.

Any comments ??

Lars

In addition to commenting on the GP manager bugs here maybe we should
e-mail Microprose en-masse and maybe we'll get something done a bit
quicker. I've already done this, let's see if they actually give a
shit about the people buying their products.

I too have e-mailed MicroProse and Spectrum Holobyte concerning the bugs in the game, both those
I discovered myself and others I have learned of via this newsgroup. That was ten days ago.
Either I misunderstood the fact that e-mail is supposed to be quicker than snail-mail, or the
guy answering the e-mail is the same one trying to finish F1GP2 :-)

Yeah, until all these bugs are addressed with a patch anyone
who is thinking about buying it like myself hold on to your $$$
for now.  As far as the manual goes a skimpy cryptic manual dont
bother me too much.  That seems the way all entertainment software
manuals are, so you can fork out another $20 for their "cluebook" !
The icr2 manual is borderline useless as well.  We can always
share info on here or publish faq's to figure it out.  The bugs
gotta go though.
