A friend of mine has Nascar 2003. He has installed it several times, patched
it and unpatched and after the intro movie he gets a black screen? He has
other games that work fine. It doesn't lock up the system just goes black. I
had him switch OGL & D3D still the same. He also has latest NVIDIA drivers.
Any suggestions?

Run DXDIAG and turn D3D sound acceleration down one notch.

Disable the sound card all the way or even remove it and try it.

You could have him try this. Go into the NR2003 folder and run "config.exe",
and then choose D3D API and the lowest resolution and color depth allowable.
Maybe this will allow him to get "into" the game at least once so he can
disable the intro video from the options menu IIRC, which I think is the
utlimate fix for this problem, or has been in the past.

If that fixes it, or he can some day get the game running somehow and
disable that intro video, then he can of course choose the OGL API and as
high a resolution as he cares to choose and it supported by his system once
it is running for him without a hitch.

Just fixed this very problem (literally just now,got it going 1/2 hour ago). Was getting a classic full blown hard reboot lockup after the NR2003 movie played. This is on a brand new box that I'm briging up to speed so there wern't any old drivers shades lingering. All other games installed so far had worked fine. Turned out it was the sound drivers for the on board sound (SoundMax Ac97 chipset). Reloaded with the exact same driver downloaded from the ASUS site for the motherboard and everything seems to be fine now. Odd that everything else, including GPL,  worked OK, on the old drivers but thats computers for you :)

Wouldn't it be easier to just edit the app.ini file in the main NR2003
directory?

[Gameplay Options]
menuBackgroundAnimations=0                      ; enable the background menu
animations
sequences=0                                     ; Intro/exit sequences enabled

Change the 0's to 1's and save?
