ECCI - Help!

ECCI CDS 4000.

Everything working OK.

Open N42002 demo (which I have done many, many times).

While on the track noticed the down shift paddle did not work.

Opened N4, down shift paddle not working.

Rebooted computer, same problem, checked all wiring, same problem.

Opened game controller panel (Win 98SE) and button 1, upper left worked,
button 2 upper right worked, button 4 right shift paddle worked, button 3
left shift paddle.....the light was on, did not work.

So, in my wisdom I assumed the left paddle switch was bad.............I
reversed the wiring for the left side of the wheel......and viola the left
shift paddle now worked....but the button 1 did not. So I assume the switch
is OK.

I traced all the wires and they seem OK.

I am using the wheel, just reassigned the left paddle shifter.... but the
left button 1 is not working.

Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have a lan race this
weekend and don't want it to cut out on me during the event.

TIA,

SKnarr49

If not h/w, must be a s/w glitch.  Do you have GoBack or ME equiv?  Or
delete & reinstall ECCI.

You could have a wire that's broken internally, the outer insulation will look
fine, and it will work intermittently if it's bent the right way. I just had
this problem with my ECCI where the wires come out of the back of the wheel
housing and get bent alot. Use a ohm meter and check for continuity while
moving each segment of the wire. Switches can fail intermittently as well,
again, check their resistance with an ohm meter.

I have has this problem on two different computers. I have both a ECCI
and a TSW. It is probably not the wheel because I can change the ECCI
and put on the TSW and the dtuck light is still on. The only way I was
able to fix it was to get a new sound card. That worked for awhile and
then it happened again. At that time, I just got a new computer. I
needed it for other things, but the main deciding factor was this
button sticking problem. I used the new computer for 9 months and all
was fine and now it has happened again on the new one. I am so
frustrated I could scream. Yours is the first time I have ever heard
of someone having the same problem. I think the only fix is a new
sound card but I sure wish someone would tell me I am wrong and what
is causing this.

Before buying a new soundcard, you must be VERY sure you're having a
hardware problem. Since Windows tends to***up certain things for no
apparent reason, you should try another way of testing your hardware. Which
is:

Download a very old, but incredibly useful utility from Thrustmaster here:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/~jjcox/tmscope.exe. It's called TMScope and it allows
you to test your game controlling hardware (e.g. your wheel and buttons) in
good old MS-DOS. Once you got that, boot to MS-DOS (not a Windows DOS-box,
but plain, clear, no-bull, MS-DOS).

Then, use the TMScope utility to test your wheel. You need to configure the
utility first. If your button is not working in this util and you configured
it right, only then will you know for sure you're having a hardware problem
and it's not good old Windows screwing you up.

Good luck!

Thanks Joeri. I know it is not the wheel because I can use either
wheel (ECCI or TSW) and once it starts happeneing it happens with
either one. But I know of no way to fix it. Deleting the joystick
thing in device manager and having it find the device and reload at
reboot does not fix it. Neither does reloading Windows over the old
version. I have not tried a hard drive format and reload because that
would involve too many program reinstalls and finding disks and
passwords. It is easier to get a new sound card. The ECCI wheel may be
causing it by burning out something on the soundcard. Or it may be a
windows problem. But it happens every six months or so, regardless of
the computer. So now I am down to just Nascar 4 with auto shifting
because I cannot use GPL or F1 2001 because of the shifting problem
and this is the third time in the last year, on two different
computers and 3 different makes of sound cards.

This sounds like a real nightmare, Buford!

Nevertheless, I'm very curious if the test I described also shows a problem
or not. I can't imagine the wheel burning something on the soundcard or
anything like that, since the wheel is not generating any electricity. Even
though weirder things have happened :-)

The best of luck to you, I hope you'll fix it one day or another.

Have you tried taking the sound card out of the equation altogether by removing
it from the computer and using your motherboards joystick/midi port. You could
also try swapping sound cards with a friend and see if the problem transfers
with the soundcard.

I have tried taking the sound card out and putting it in another slot
and removing and reloading the softare for it but that does not work.
My computers do not seem to have anywhere else to hook the joystick to
other than the sound card. I do not know where this motherboard
joystick/midi port is. The only connection on the outside that fits
the joystick is the soundcard. I am not a technicion so am not very
knowledgeable. Where would you connect it?

What brand and model of pc are you using? What motherboard? Do you
have a manual for it? Look in the manual for the Midi/game port
connector. Look on the back of your computer. The midi/game port
connector is identical to the 15 pin joystick connector on your sound
card.

The old one was built by a local shop and it has no other connection
on the outside that fits the joystick connector other than the sound
card. The new one (last spring) that has now developed the same
problem is a Sony Vaio Pentium 4-1.5 and the manuals have a lot about
video editing which is what I mainly got it for but nothing much of a
technical nature. Other than a drawing of the back showing what
connects where and the only place that fits a joystick is the sound
card. There is not even a description of how to get the box open which
I have not been able to do fully. I have no mechanical apptitude so I
cannot even get into where you can remove the cards, though I am sure
it is possible. In any event, on neither computer are there two
different places that fit a joystick connector on the outside. Both
only have the sound card connector for that. Thanks for your help
though. I am babbled by this problem.
