Depends on how you define acceptable. I used to think an on-track minimum in
the mid 20's was ok, with an average of 30-32. But I've since upgraded, now
getting 36 everywhere except on the starting grid, and the difference is not
subtle. I'd say that anything below 30, apart from right at the start, is a
problem. You can do it with less and enjoy it, but you're definitely
sacrificing some feel. And "feel" is what sets GPL apart from the crowd, after
all.

For me, I find that I begin to lose the fine control around 30-32 fps.
When it starts getting into the 20's, the decline in controlability
begins to be almost unplayable. I can handle 26-28 fps during the
starts with AI, but would not want to race the full distance at this (or
any lower fps).
For those on the quest for high frame rates (and as much eye-candy as
you can get) and have a 3DFX card, try using the glide wrapper authored
by George Smiley <http://www.grandprix2.com/gpl/patches/glide2x.zip>.
Try setting the mirror to refresh every other frame. I found that this
works quite well (updates are often enough for safe defensive driving)
and allowed me to turn on more eye-candy at higher resolutions and still
maintain a fairly steady 36 fps. However, at some tracks I must turn
off the track and objects in the mirrors if everything else is turned
on.

Definitely agree with this, the difference between mid-high 20's and
having constant (apart from grid/pits) 36 is massive as far as gameplay
goes, its just a different game, I'm having to relearn tracks since I
upgraded. Watch those lap-times fall!

Ok well here is my question then. With Greame's help I have my itty bitty
P1 233 with no L2 cache able to run online and actually race. For example
running monza I see between 14 FPS and 24 FPS depending on postion on track
and cars in view. Under these conditions I ahve qualified in the mid to
low 1:28s and race in the mid to high 1:28s with low 1:29s if I am leading
or not pressing for position. What times should I expect if I upgraded and
Have game running at a constant 36 FPS.

No doubt they would improve somewhat. I think you'll also find that you're
not nearly as competitive at other more circuitous tracks with the frame
rates that you describe. Time for the upgrade, David. <g>
.
Well Rouen is giving me fits right now in the BRM, but otherwise I seem to
be about the same time of the fast guys everywhere, which ranges from one
second to two seconds. That is why I did ask since, it would be really
cool to be able to run faster with only a PC upgrade, in the real car it
does not seem to matter how much trick stuff I put on it the best money
spent is for good quality drivers schools.
