Gave Up 2yrs of Free Cable TV...

I finally caved in and gave up 2 years of free cable just to upgrade my
service to include Speedvision so I could watch all those "Legends of
Motorsports" episodes that drive me mad as I listen to them through a
scrambled picture. Yes, 2 years ago my local cable company stopped
sending me bills for their services. I even called them to tell them but
the befuddled telephone rep just said, "But we don't have you listed as
getting cable." So now I can watch Formula 1 races live, and tonight
I've just watched a re-run of Goodwood '99.

'twas wonderful! Watching Stirling Moss fighting with Sir Jack Brabham
for the corner in 1950's F1's, and then watching the 60's machines with
3 (yes, 3!) Lotus 49's competing. My heart stopped and I literally held
my breath as two of them spun out and stopped just before hitting the
barrier. Later they showed Sir Jack and his McLaren in the *** crash
in which the Lotus 49 Jackie Oliver was driving was also heavily
damaged. Great to actually see Ferrari 312's and BRM P126's fighting it
out in living color. I taped it on VHS, but have no ability to digitize
it. That program made it worth giving up the free cable. Grand Prix
Legends, you've corrupted me forever....

Boo hoo... no Speedvision in Switzerland.  All I can do is buy my copies of
Classic & Sports Cars, squint my eyes real tight when I look at the vintage
photos, and make BRM noises.  Bruummm  Brummmm  Brummmm.  You lucky, lucky,
luck, luck, luck, lucky fellows!

Not to mention the guy is 70 years old and is still leaving people half his
age eating his dust/spray.

In a fairly recent interview Sir Moss stated that if he hadn't made the
mistake of retiring after his Goodwood crash he would have only retired a
few years ago. Hell, with the recent exploits of Mssr. Newman maybe he'd
still be at it as a full time pro.

Newman and Moss at Daytona, showing the kiddies how it's done. I can dream.

Absolutely.

I was there at the circuit that weekend. The funniest sight of the whole
time was to see SM baulked by a slower driver at the kink on Lavant straigh,
during qualifying on the saturday. He promptly passed the guy, pointed to
his mirrors and then gave a two fingered Anglo-Saxon salute.

Only wish that I could get Speedvision here in Oz. But I don't recall
Jack ever driving a McLaren, only for Cooper then his Brabhams. What's
the go?

I beleive they were talking about the Goodwood Festival that gathered
all sorts of old old old cars and drivers and paraded them around the
small goodwood circuit.   Of course some of the drivers tried much
harder than others...:)  Sir Jack and Sterling Moss being a couple of
those.  Each year they get together at Goodwood Castle with lots of
people wearing Period clothes and they have plenty of class racing and
hill climbing.  Speedvision, a US Cable/Sattellitte company, has been
showing filmed recaps of the events.  Great Stuff.
Lots of times the Drivers can climb back into the very cars that made
them famous, but other times they are in completely different Marques
and styles.

You are in so much trouble.  In a year or so you will start
getting bills for negative 30 dollars a month.
Eventually, they will sic collectors on you and finally
take you to court to force you to accept your $720
refund.

TCI Lawyer:  "No sir, that clause is clearly only in effect for King
County."
City Councilman: "Um, Mr. *******, our city IS in King County."

> I finally caved in and gave up 2 years of free cable just to upgrade my

I'm considering ordering Speedvision also.
But the idea of reminding the Cable Company that I exist,
(not to mention the correct spelling of my name)
is pretty scary.  The idea that they might eventually
be able to correlate names, addresses and their own account numbers
is terrifying...

Uh, no.

"Corrupt" is *stealing* two years worth of cable service.

Ah yes, I see. The Goodwood festival will definately have to be seen
when I (someday) get over to England. Until then, I'll have to make
sure I get to Adelaide for next years Adelaide 500. Not specifically
for the v8 races, but more for the Formula Adelaide races. These are
races for 64-68 vintage, non-aero F1 cars. Fantastic stuff, something
not usually available here in Aust.

I think "corrupt" and "stealing" only apply when you did something to
allow you to view the programming, here the person said he called to
correct the error, at that point it became the cable companies
responsibility to bill him, or allow him to view for free. If he has
documented the phone calls and the response and persons name he talked
to the cable company can do nothing, as the negligence was on their
part. So what was it supposed to do, disconnect the cable and not
watch is just because the cable company was to stupid/lazy to research
the problem an bill him.

Exploiting the missteps of others for personal gain is immoral.  Screw the
legalities involved.  You don't  *take* something that doesn't belong to
you -- even if it may go unnoticed.  Exploitative larceny.

That would be a valid argument ONLY if the fellow hadn't actually called the
company to allow them to correct their misstep.  If they choose *not* to do
so, the issue of exploitation is quite gone: said company has been informed
of the consequences of their mistake (free cable for out mutual friend), and
they have willingly consented to allow those consequences to continue.

I find your puritan rhetoric amusing.
