% Anyone remember chequered flag on the 48K spectrum? :)

Yep, my first experience at tracks like Brands Hatch.  This was the only
'sim' I recall that had track debris.  The only thing about the debris
was that it was always in the same spot.

How about the old Atari arcade game, "Night Driving" (I think that was
what it was called)?  Or the original classic, "Pole Position"??  Do
those count, or are we just talking computer-based sims?

LOL your killing me David.  Where is your proof ? PC data doesn't have the
same numbers as what you said.    ;-)

Was it "Chequered Flag" on the Spectrum that allowed you to calibrate a
biscuit tin lid as a steering wheel ? - you had to place it on the G key for
straight ahead and roll it over the H,J,K,L keys for steering right and over
the F,D,S,A for steering left ! I can remember spending hours driving Paul
Ricard as the biscuits went soggy :-)

Also, does anyone remember playing "Turbo Cup" on the Atari ST ? It was a
Porsche racing game made by a French company.

Andy.

How about "Grand Prix Circuit" from Accolade back in '88. I used to spend
way too much time racing entire F1 seasons on that one.

Oh thirty years. I was 15 and she was older then me, but it .....oops
oh, ah, never mind : )

I've been sim racing 5 years since I found ICR1. I've been hooked ever
since. GPL has ruined me for GP2, ICR2 and N2. They just don't feel
right anymore.

Those numbers are correct. 1.1 milion copies of F1RS have been sold
worldwide in less than a year. Those numbers are from UbiSoft. They are also
the numbers UbiSoft had prominently placed on their MGPRS2 site for anyone
to see. I guess they could have been lying......

I asked the owner of the Unofficial F1RS/MGPRS2 web sites and he came back
with the same numbers.

He passed the 1 million visitor mark to his F1RS site in November (when was
F1RS released?). He still receives an average of 1,600 visitors a day to his
F1RS site, and is receiving an average of 2,500 visitors a day to his new
MGPRS2 site. The F1RS site almost had to be shut down a few times due to
overwhelming traffic.

Sounds like a very popular sim to me.

David G Fisher

GPL is an excellent sim.

D.

Not that it matters much, but I thought Rick D. had to (almost) shut down
the site because of disputes with his server over the total MBs of goo he
had in there . . . .   I never read that it was an issue of site traffic.

I could be wrong.

D.

MSGP2 is a an awkwardly-named sim.

Hmmm...
You Name It/I played it racing games for NES (Days of Thunder, Bill Elliott,
Ivan Stewart...great fun...) way back to, oh, probably '87 or '88 when I was
four or five.  Since then:
1990: 'Vette (Corvette racing game in San Francisco, only real racing game
on my Mac Classic)
1992: Mario Kart - Super Nintendo
1993: F-Zero - Super Nintendo
1995-Present: IndyCar 1 (with BOTH track packs! :) NASCAR 1 (with track
pack) World Circuit, IndyCar 2, NASCAR 2, Grand Prix 2, Need For Speed 1 and
3, NR1999, Redline Racer, GPL, Mario Kart 64, F-Zero 64 (I love those games)

The memories...beating a Lambo in a lesser Corvette...beating Mario Kart
(64) and F-Zero (64)...FINISHING a 10% race at Indy with damage on in a
Buick...WINNING in NASCAR/WC/ICR2/GP2/NFS1/NFS3/NR1999/Redline
Racer....getting under 1:10 at the Glen :)

It's been about 11 years for me....out of 15 :)

How long have you been doing it? When was your first time??

First racing game of any sort was on the old Magnavox 2000 video game console.
A simple indy car shape that you had to guide around a track (actually a
continueous maze on the screen).  It was actualy pretty fun as you could race
head to head.  Then came Indy 500 the Sim.  I remember i got like THE first
copy to hit the shelves.  I was only like 7 yrs old but i waited for almost 2
months for this game.  I played that thing for hours on end on an old IBM P-70
(no not a pentium...just a model name).  I think i won the Indy 50 (20 lap
option) about 100 times and the actuall 500 2 or 3.

After that i got Ferrari GP Challenge for Sega Genesis.  For a Sega game it
was pretty complex.  You had the option of 3 types of wings, shocks, brakes,
engines, 4 types of tires (2 dry-2 wet), Auto or Manual 4 or 7 speed gear
boxes.  It also had 20 different tracks including all the GP tracks (for the 91
season) plus 4 "trainer tracks" Long Beach, Mid Ohio, Oyster Bay, and
Indinapolis (run backwards though).

Next real racing sim was ICR1 (and both expansion packs)-1993, then N1 (and
expansion pack)-1994, GP2-1996, N2-1998, ABC Indy Racing-1998, and finally
GPL-1998.

I remember a game I think was called "Night Racer"
it had a black screen, and you raced a stationery purple car through
dynamic purple cones.  It was played on a console (not sure which one).
I played this as a kid/***ager, and considering that I'm now pushing 40,
this was some time ago. ;)
