How long have you been doing it? When was your first time??

I was just wondering what the exact date for the anniversary / birthday of sim
racing is?

Is it maybe the release date of "Indy 500, the Simulation" or is it earlier
than that? I suspect we're going back to the mid-late 80's here. What was the
first ever sim which was as popular as GPL?

I think that since sim racing was born these have been the most popular (ie.
have had dozens of web pages dedicated to them, including racing leagues,
utilities and addons)

GPL: 1998
NASCAR Racing One/Two/1999: 1994/1996/1998
F1GP2: 1996
F1GP: 1991(?)
IndyCar Racing One & Two: 1993/1995
Indy 500, the Simulation?: 1988(??)

Is there anyone here who was racing and practicing 24 hrs a day any particular
sim 10 years ago, in the same way we all do now? :)

Maybe we can try to put an exact date on Sim Racings birthday and cebrate it
sometimes. I think we may have even missed it's 10th birthday! 10 YEARS!

What will we be racing in 2040?

way before N2 or even Indy 500 the sim for pc there was.. Indianapolis 500
the sim..  made by papyrus for amiga!  the first real sim ever made, atleast
as far as i know.  Been a papyrus freak ever since. I dont really buy any
other games besides Papyrus sims.

Aside from the very early atari games, my first pc sims ran on my Tandy
1000, they were...

Indy 500 the simulation (a landmark sim in my opinion)
Test Drive 2: The Duel

those were the days.

1995 - F1GP, Indy 500
1996 - GP2
1998 - GPL

I only became interested in Motorsport in 1995 so that's when my
interest in sims grew. Although I clocked many hours in "Mario Kart"
before that :-)

I think you are missing one of the best sellers. F1RS sold over 1 million
copies in less than a year. I don't know how many copies MGPRS2 has sold.

Mid 80's some time... Pitstop II on the Commodore 64, and Racing Destruction
Set... hardly simulators, but loads of fun

Well, I had played the original '76 Atari "Night Driver" in the arcades, as well as
a few games that played a movie that shifted according to the track and your
steering wheel input (can't remember the names)

Indianapolis 500 was a major motivator for me to defect from the Mac ranks
and go PC. I wouldn't say I played it 24hrs a day, but I played it quite religiously
at the time.

Oi! I hadn't realized it had been that long! Yikes!

Heh. If I'm still around then, I suspect that the racing games will be quite amazing.
Look how far we've come in ten years! Heck, by 2010 we'll probably have
accomplished photorealistic graphics, have at least a few sims with virtually
perfect physics models, and who knows what else?

The only problem is that some things won't have improved much. The "feel" will
always be imperfect at best, and I have my doubts about AI ever getting to the
point where you can't tell the difference between human and computer drivers.
Either way, the journey should be great fun, and I'm glad I'm around to enjoy it. =)

My racing career started with Indy 500 "The Sim"
Man, I have had so many fun hours with that game!

After that I switched to Indycar 1.
After Indycar 1 (we must be end 1996 now) I started
playing GP2 untill then end of 1998!

After GP2 I started playing MGPRS2 (My old
Pc wouldn't run GPL). After building a new
Pc 3 weeks ago I started playing GPL....
Great game...

I also am really into Superbike WC last 2 days.
If GP3 would have graphics like SBK I will cry
of happiness!

The first motor racing simulation I remember playing was in an amu***t
arcade.  It was a coin-operated electro-mechanical machine which had a die
cast toy car suspended over a road painted on a fabric belt.  I last
remember seeing one of these in the sixties... wait a minute, that was when
GP cars had no wings and Denny Hulme was world champ.  Where is this thread
leading us?

Here's another one to ponder.  A couple of nights ago I channel hopped into
an TV re-run of the Avengers and it showed a simulator using a film
projected onto a screen mounted in front of a single seat chassis of some
kind.  there was a link between the steering and the projector which crudely
simulated the effect of steering left and right.  I don't know exactly what
date this would have been, but I vaguely remember these things being set up
at motor shows and the like.

It just makes me feel so lucky to be experiencing the development of the PC
as a simulation tool.
