GPL and older system...

Well, I'm thinking about buying GPL at the beggining of the month, but
I'm wondering, would this system be able to run GPL with a good
framerate (With some graphic settings turned off)

Pentium 166 (Ok, you can stop laughing...please?)
32 megabytes RAM (Do I still hear that laughter?)
Voodoo Banshee (Ok, laughing stopped there, although I do know the
Banshee isn't the best)

Was just wondering if anyone thought it would be worth buying GPL. I
wanna see why people are still talking about it. :) (Ok, that sounded
like a cheap marketing ploy, eh? <G> By the way, if this sounds weird, I
didn't get any sleep last night.)

Well, as you may have guessed GPL won't run very nicely on a 166. To get
reasonable frames rates you would need to turn all the graphic options off
and it won't look very good. You won't be able to run against more than a
few ai cars either. It really needs a 300 to run well and with a 450 it is
brilliant. I had a 200 with 64 meg ram and a rendition video card and it
barely cut it so I built a celeron 450 and it was worth every penny.

Before I got my new sytem built, I had a 166MMX/32MB EDO RAM/ Rendition
V2100. In 640x480, with about half the graphics off, I got around 30 FPS in
practice and 22-24 with 8 AI cars, 16-18 with 2 or 3 cars on screen. It's
driveable, but not nearly as good as it is on a faster  system.

Have you tried the demo? I'd try that first, and see how it works. That may
help you decide whether it will be worth it to you.

Download the 18mb demo from Papy.com and try it out.  You might be able to get
a feel for the game in training mode with a lot of the graphics off, but racing
(with the full version) will be pretty much out of the question.  It'll be
possible, but GPL, more than any sim I've tried, demands a near-max framerate
before you can appreciate the accuracy of its driving model.  GPL at 20FPS just
isn't GPL.  I've been running a 200mmx/Voodoo2 setup, and get 30+FPS
hotlapping, but racing's not so good; low to mid 20's far too often there, with
6-car fields.  I finally caved, with supply fast running out; a retail
Celery/BH6 combo is on the  way.  450mhz, here I come.  Might as well be ready
for N3 and RC99 in advance.

_if_ the demo still doesn't have opponents (does it now?) I'd say it's
more misleading than informative.  Having other cars on the track
cuts framerate big-time on a slower cpu.

I had a 166mmx with 8 meg ATI XPERT 98 and even with most graphics OFF, it
was'nt playable.

I've since upgraded to an Abit BH6 with a Celeron 300a OC'd to 450 and its
much better.  Even with all the cars, all graphics, the game is playable
now.  I just need to get a VooDoo2 or Banshee and it will rock..

Just adding to the confusion here........
I run GPL online with a P166. I get mostly 36 fps but not below 30fps
(with the exception of the starting grid of some tracks 26-29 fps) I
have some detail turned off but it's because it's stuff I dont like
anyway. But here's the trick- The cpu is overclocked to 225mhz and is
running on a FIC MoBo with a 1meg cache (it makes a BIG difference for
GPL) I have 64m ram (32 is fine I think?) And I use a StealthII vid
card (rendition based with rend. sdk drivers).
I am very pleased with the performance of GPL on my antique system
but, I just saw a 300a celery for $62 so by the time you do a handfull
of upgrades to get your 166 tweaked I bet you could just swap out your
cpu and MoBo and have plenty of power to spare. See ya on the track.

What do you have for a modem??

USR 56k / ISA  type. But if I had to go buy one today it would be a
USB type.

Thanks... I'm building a Celery, too, and I'm also leaning toward a USB
modem... no cable modem service around here yet and I'm not sold on
ISDN. (No ASDL here yet either -- Milwaukee area). Whatever I do, I
gotta chuck my d*mn Winmodem....

I ran GPL on a P200 Non-MMX with 80MB and Voodoo I.
Was ok for driving alone, but no chance with AI - to slow.
