Wicked3d Eyescream & racing games

I (finally) got hold of some Wicked3D shutterglasses and I tried them with varius racing games/sims.
V3/2000, PIII450, AsusP2BF.

I would like to share some of my findings.
GPL1.1: with resolutions above 640*480 some textures become transparent (tire walls, some***pit textures, and
especially the racing groove:/). however, in stereo-mode the horizontal resolution is halved, and things look
rather ugly (at least compared to 800*600 non stereo). The only way to work around this is to use a 1280*960
resolution override. Works perfectly apart from:
- Framerate hit in***pit view (getting only 30 fps). This has to do with
- the mirrors go completely nuts. even if you turn everything off (cars only without any textures), they show some
sort of scenery zooming by...parts of the sky and scenery at weird angles and such...and its of course no possible
to use a glide wrapper to reduce the framerate in the mirrors.
-its not recommended to change view, got to the options/replay menu or do anything else but drive in stereo mode.
anything else causes a severe graphic lockup.
So i changed the driving view to rollbar view and decided to stick with it. solid 36 fps in stereo.
The Glide gamma correction doesn't work, which means things look rather dark, and ghosting is worse than it would
be with a brighter image.
Don't get me wrong, once things work, it's brilliant. Just a lot of hassle until it works.

Colin McRae: override mode causes a lockup the a soon as you start the second stage (but it works for one stage.
strange). No lockups in 800*600 mode, and the interlacing is tolerable at that resolution.
Great depth. Even the***pit view becomes driveable (it is possible to judge the distances to corner entries even
in this low and obstructed point-of-view.no ghosting at all(!!). runs absolutely smooth, great feeling of "being
there" (esp with force feedback). it really catches the essence of what rallying is all about. very, very
spectacular.

SportsCar GT: works almost flawless in both override and non-override stereo mode, BUT:
it takes a _severe_ hit in framerate (i would judge that it runs with only around 10 fps). It's the only game
where in noticed this effect. Apart from that things look good, it's possible to look "far" down the road.
ghosting is not as "bad" as in GPL (because the gamma correction works).

GP500 Demo: Great. The***pit view in stereo is the next best thing to actually riding such a bike. Works
flawless (and in high resolutions), and extremely impressive. Now if they would include force feedback in the
final version......:). Ghosting can be reduced with the gamma slider.

EA SBK: refused to work. Simply dumps you to the desktop.

NFHSH: gives an error message and locks up. Pity, should look good.

After all, if you have the time at hand to try out all the options and tweaking (i took a while for me to find out
that the texture errors in gpl don't ocuur at 640*480) it's absolutely worth it.

Happy racing,
Andreas

varius racing games/sims.
(SNIP GOOD STUFF)

Andreas,
Thanks for the mini-review. Just 2 questions: Did you try GPL 1.0? (seem
to remember other RASers saying it worked well some time back) and WHERE DID
YOU GET THEM ?????. (I've been looking for some time)

            Cheers..
            Phillip...

I picked them up at Ebay (the german version of it). www.ebay.de. got them fairly cheap:)

Your suggestion of trying out GPL1.0 led me to use the glide wrapper once again (the new rend3dfx.dll that came
with gpl1.1 made that obsolete for V3 users). I tried its resolution override feature, and voila, no more
corrupted textures in high res!:). I've settled now for 1024*768, no res override by the metabyte drivers (GPL was
the only game were this was necessary because of the textures anyway). Things work perfectly now apart from:
-the mirrors _still_ go crazy. its best to turn them off (wich is easy with the glide wrapper).
-image is a little to dark in stereo mode. (and the gamma correction doesn't work)
-its recommended to switch to the car, turn on stereo, drive, and before you return to the menus, turn stereo off
again. otherwise its likely to crash.
-on occassions where you normally would see artifacts you aren't supposed to see (e.g crashing into the weeds
behind some barrier), everthing locks up->reset. Thats only really, really annoying thing that remains to be
solved.
GPL1.0 works just as well as GPL1.1.

Regards,
Andreas

I installed the 7MB download dated from 8/04/99, the latest available driver package.

Is there anyone using them with F1RS or MGPR2 ?
Is it worth it ?
