So glad I preorderded this game.  After having been surviving on the '97 game,
given how louse the '98 version was, it was a welcome arrival.  The first
thing that hits you is the opening demo, which is unbelievable.  It felt like
I was at Albert Park.  Ok, the demo's great but what about the game.  Here's
what I liked.

1.  ability to tweak/adjust setups during the actual practice and qualifying
    sessions.

2.  More Fine tuning of setups.  Combine that with presets and suggestions,
qualifying at an acceptable pace is really possible.

3.  Rearview mirrors!!!!  What open wheel gar is any good without them.
THough very tiny, depending on screen size, a very handy and much
    welcome addition tothe game.

4. Blue Flags!  about time.  How many times I got held up by a Minardi in
the '97 game was unbelievable.  NOt any more

Issues:

1.  More onboard camera angles needed.  Unlike the '97 version, there is a
much smaller number of vantage points from which to drive the car.

2.  Sand traps.  If you off and stop, the game should end with the status of
    dnf.

Get serious... This game is the worst ever made... OF1R looks like a
masterpiece compared to F1 '99... The game is 100% arcade...

Who said that ? There was no concensus that it was good, au contraire...

Well Yippee-ki-yay, setups! ;)

Wow this is -so- 1999.

I bet you were actually holding up on the Minardi ;)

You should drive with only 1 view, the***pit one if you post on r.a.s.

Well at least a good point.. and that's to ALL the games on the market at
the moment, even GPL.  FYI don't take offense at my flaming, it's just that
sometimes it's fun and in your case it was way too easy.  And you can flame
me back if you want, of course!

I love this kind of shit.  I've been reading this newsgroup since its
beginnings in, what, 1994?  I have never felt the need to get into this
over-the-top fanaticism about "sims".  GPL is a sim.  NFS is a sim.  Pole
Position is a sim (albeit a poor one).  Driving from the chase view allows
some people to replace the missing seat of the pants feel with visual
clues about yaw.  The whole process is still a simulation of driving a
motor car.

THAT BOLLOCKS

Reason (and my opinion is shared by failed racing driver, Tiff Needell)

Games show a 2D image - it is virtually impossible to judge distances
accurately from a***pit view on a monitor.  However - by raising your
view, to say, Rollbar height (such as in F1 '97) you gain a better sense
of distance, and a slightly better view of what is to your left and
right...

For someone clearly FANATICAL about GPL (Cockpit view junkie are we?)
then you're also being highly hyprocritical of the realism in GPL - to
maximise this realism, one must generate the easiest method of giving
life-like sense of depth, and lateral vision. This can be achieved from
a slightly higher camera angle, NOT from the***pit.

What utter nonsense!

Whilst use of the***pit is prefered by most racers on RAS, as it is
the most realistic, there is no formal or informal rule to say that
one must drive a certain way to be considered a good racer, or to post
messages to this newsgroup!

just played this game for around 3 minutes.....
It sucked.
Although the murray walker (i think) commentary had me actually laughing out
loud!  It was great!  a GPL murray walker patch would be great fun....
although I don't exactly welcome it... but it would be hilarious..
you have to hear it.

To say, one HAS to use the***pit view to be able to post on ras is, well,
bollocks...

OTOH, I'd rather see what the driver sees (->cockpit view), not what a
camera would see. That's what I call realism.
