Ouch! It depends on your car, but you can get to 1:30's area in the faster cars.
You need a good wheel and pedals in GPL, and a fast PC/graphics helps a lot too
- it is much easier to drive with high frame rates. I am still learning, and can
turn consistent race laps in the 1:32's with the Repco Brabham.

Hi Ben,

Crap?  Well, its not 'the best' ;-)  You're probably just learning to
drive these cars and haven't reached the next plateau yet.

When trying for 'fast laps' you need to be great on all corners (as if
you didn't know that).

It sounds like you are braking too early for all the corners.  I can do
sub 1:30's but it takes a real effort to force yourself not to brake too
early for the corners.

My advice is this: If you are staying at a constant speed before turning
into a corner, you are braking to early.  Basically, you should be
either on the gas or the brake, but never just 'coasting' or 'creeping
up' to the corner.  Another way to put it is -- if you have a 1 second
'coasting' period before you turn into the corner (and you always have
around 1 second) try braking a smidge later.  You'll find that you only
have 1/2 second 'coasting' time now.  That will give you a better time.
Of course, you want to try to make a turn such that you have no
'coasting' time, but just brake, turn/gas out of the corner.

Watch some replays to see where others are braking.  I bet your braking
really early.

Of course the controller helps.  I use a T2 with combined gas/brake and
it works well.

Hope this helps,
Jason.

Hate to tell you, but get on the toilet... :-)

Actually, it is a difficult place to get the hang of... but 1:27s are
VERY good online laps. I can do 1:29s online now in the Brab after MUCH
practice.

Pay keen attention to the racing groove... it helps "tell" you where to
cross the crown of the track, which is quite severe. The crown is very
tough to see, but it does exist. So when you are in a corner, when you
are on the inside of a crown, it is like banking. On the outside of a
crown it is like being off-camber, or reverse banking... not good for
lap times.

So really try to be slightly inside of the racing line in the corners.
It will help your control and lap times immensly. Also, I find a car
setup to be fairly loose (more rear anti-roll bar than front) helps too.

Just takes time! Keep trying. :-)

Heehee! I thought so... pretty darn funny. You usually race there in the
Ferrari... but I've made some inroads on setup. Hopefully I'll go
quicker soon... :-)

Hi Dave,

I haven't driven the Ferrari too much lately (I would like to keep my hearing
for a bit longer ;)

I have been dabbling with the other cars to see what will they can do with a
reasonable driver behind the wheel.  The Eagle is my favorite car right now for
competing with the Lotus crowd :)  I have learned a lot about setups and such
by trying different cars and will go back to the Ferrari one day.

Hey Ben- I just wanted to add to the other good suggestions here. For
some reason I had the hardest time with Silverstone and Kylami for a
while, even though I had gotten fairly quick at the other tracks. So,
what I did was get out of the Eagle (my usual ride ) and get in to the
Coventry using Alison Hind's setups. Once in the Cov. I did lap after
lap until I was comfortable with the braking points and turn-ins and
could lap consistently. Then I connected (1 on 1) to a buddy of mine
,also in a Cov , in order to "train". My lap times went down in a
hurry in all of the cars. The Cov (with AH's setup )is a excellent
trainer and when you go 1 on 1 with someone it will push you more than
if you train by your self. Ask around in a V.R.O.C. race and I'll bet
you can find someone to train with. I'd do it.

My problem is braking too late :)  I have "Danced the Treetops of

OK, I will look for the setup's.. I havent tinkered with them as yet!!!!
Although if you go to www.grandprix2.com/gpl you will be able
to down load a few patches, Changing Coventry to Cooper
and Murasama to Honda....   and it will update little things they left out
of the orig. game.

I have never raced against another humas yet!!!
Can I do it only using my 28.8 modem ????
Any Novice fancing a Race ????

Hi Ben---I  just got GPL and have never raced against another person yet either
.  I would be interested in racing against you or anyone else reading this
post. I have had the game for about 3 weeks and think it is awesome .
I have a 56k modem but I think your 28.8 might be too slow (anyone????) I am
not sure if AOL being my only isp is going to help things either. What do you
think is the best way for us to try to hook up. Not sure if there is a direct
modem connect option or even if that would be practical since I am not sure how
far apart we are. (I live in Saugus Massachusetts, about 5 miles north of
Boston) The best times for we would be weeknights between 9PM-12AM EST.

thanks

I have a 56k modem but the lines in my area only handle 28,8  and I
manage just fine racing online.
28.8 is fine for GPL if you are a client and 56k is fine to host
with if there are only 2 peeps. There is some DUN tweaking to be done
(you can find out about that from some of the GPL web pages)
So now there are NO excuses! Just do it!    : )
