Best auto Sims:

GPL
NFS:PU
NFS:HS

(because I use a Voodoo3 3500 card still)

A continually underrated sim/game is Viper Racing.  If it had a better
online capability, Viper probably would have survived much longer.
Still..it's a very decent single player game.

Nascar Heat, the sequel from Monster Games Inc., is fun to play too.
Haven't had a chance to try the new Porshe Heat Mod yet, but I hear
it's a blast.

Playing Nascar Heat (or Viper Racing) after playing NR2002 is a very empty
experience - the handling doesn't feel realistic at all by comparison.

Sounds to me you aren't talking about full-on sims.  Be sure to get NFS1 or
NFS1-SE.  Its aging a bit but should still run properly on a modern machine,
and is still the best of the NFS series.

I absolutely agree.  I still think Viper Racing is the best work those guys
have done, and it's a damn shame they won't do a Viper Racing II.

For arcade kinds of fun, NFS:PU is the best there is. Hasn't been a
decent non-sim driving game since then. :-(

Midtown Madness (the original, not the second) is a very fun game if
you haven't player it, and you should find it on the cheap.

Driver is OK but hard to get running on a modern computer.

Beyond that you are looking at sims like GPL, F1 2002, and Nascar
2002.

Well, if you are one of these *** flyers who enjoy
the most realistic settings and practice landing an F18 on
a carrier for days just to be able to catch the 3rd wire
every time - go for the 4 year old GPL, accept no substitutes :)
(and forget the system recommendations on the package - Id say
1 GB harddisk space if you want to get some of the free addons
and 16+ GB if you want to keep and analyze your replays ;)

Id compare the position of GPL in the racing sims with the
position of Falcon 4.0 in the fighter sims.. old, but still
state of the art in some aspects.

If you just want to have some racing fun, I agree with the
other posters here.. Viper racing, Sports Car GT are
nice. But maybe these are not an improvement over NFS:PU.

Have not checked out the new F1 2002 or GP 4 (too many disappointments
after buying GP3, F1 2k, Nascar Heat, Nascar 4 and several others
that came out after GPL but didnt manage to be better than that, IMHO)

Racing sims are like good wine.
The older they are, the better they get :)
