TOCA2 v GPL

TOCA2 v GPL

Why, oh, why do we have to these pitched battles every time a new sim is
released. GPL is great, of course it is. TOCA2 is great as well. MGP,
Nascar(n) and Viper racing are great too - so even is NFS3 (best
graphics of any driving game). Why this desperate need to rubbish other
games? I happen to enjoy all of the above, though I will confess to
having a favorite but that is purely a value judgement. I have no
problem that someone's favorite is different to mine. Each has its
flaws.
TOCA2 will be big, and the racing will be good. Sure point out its bad
points and where improvements need to be made - better still, tell
Codies this - but don't damage sales by speading a negative image of the
game. There are bad racing games, yes, of course there are, and it's
probably better if these go down with scarcely a ripple. But TOCA2 is
not one of these and open and constructive criticism will improve the
final game - hell, that's one of the reasons demos get released.
If you've ever watched a BTCC race, you will realise that TOCA2 captures
the scrapping excellently. Arcade or sim? Who is the arbiter?
Long live GPL.
Cheers,
Paul

Funny thing is that Toca2 here hasn't bring a negative image at all.  Little
nit-picking here and there, some thread on the canned physics, but not very
negative.  I will say it's quite the opposite.  Name me a title that didn't
got bashed here ? They all did.

GPL (yes it did !), N2, Toca1, F1RS, Gp2, Icr2 (wow that was hard at that
time), etc.. <snip every title on the market>.  I mean they ALL got bashed,
that's the point of r.a.s.   Most of us are here since 2-3 and more years
(some of us since the start back in the early 90's) and we saw soo many
titles that we developped a sense of critisism that is NOT bad at all. In
fact it's more constructive critisism than anything else.  We're open to
everything here, but please do understand that it's normal that we will base
our opinion on the best hard-core simracing title on the market, who is GPL.
Because this is rec.autos.simulators, remember.

You WON'T change anything to what we think and what we write, you know ;)

Overall, I think you're right. TOCA2 has generally had a good reaction from
r.a.s.

Yep, all of them and many unfairly. That GPL got flakked on occasion beats the
hell out of me. Such a great sim and some of the criticism of GPL was way out
off the mark.

I didn't think bashing sims was the point of r.a.s. I thought it was to discuss
them - not the same thing at all.

At one year in I'm a newbie, but I've seen the arrival of a good few sims, now.

In the main but there do seem to be some battle lines drawn.

I love GPL.

I wouldn't have it any other way Fran?ois - I'm not criticising you or this n.g.
just the battle lines.

Whahey.

Paul

Good points, Paul!

Although I'm GPL-mad, there's no denying that TOCA 2 is a load of fun! And,
heck, there's something of an entertaining arcade quality to the BTCC series
anyway!

It's just that ever-present first turn fiasco that needs to be fixed! Was
that in the first version? At all the tracks? Anyway, reduce the frequency
of excessive first turn mayhem and I think the game would be even more
entertaining than it already is.

And we were all about to elect you Goodwill Ambassador until we got
to..."Long live GPL." <G>

Have any of you ever watched the BTCC video tapes (by Duke Video)???? These
Turn 1 Fiasco's are REAL! It really happens that way when you have a bunch
of cars that are near in performance, and ALL trying to get out in front
before the others. Hell, back years ago at Road America, during the June
Sprints, it was nothing to see a field of almost 80 H-Prod Bug-Eyed Sprites,
Formula V, or Formula Fords. And then IMAGINE them all getting to Turn 1 at
the same time????  :)   Folks would literally RUSH to Turn 1 just to see the
start of the race, then be off to their real favorite parts of the track. So
I am not too sure this should be called a bug, . . . . .

And besides, I like to go on the inside of these clowns and help them along,
as I merrily blow past them. It seems to be about the only way to get ahead
as the AI is still giving more traction in turns to the computer cars  :(
