Q about N2002 and my system

by Doug Appleya » Wed, 20 Feb 2002 23:10:27

I have the following:

Dell Dimension XPS-T
Celeron 1200MHz (just upgraded from P3 550)
100MHz bus
256 MB RAM (just added a second 128MB stick)
Diamond Viper 770 non-Ultra (32MB)

Using D3D and 1024x768, I get 25 FPS in the N2002 demo
under racing conditions.  This is with 20 cars and most
details medium, anistropic off.  Prior to upgrades
and additions I got 20 fps.  Is anyone getting better
framerates with a similar rig?  Is the video card
holding me back from higher rates?

I haven't tried OpenGL BTW - perhaps give that a go
this week.

Thanks

Doug,
That antique video card just wont cut it now days.  I think the specs on
it do not even support directx 5 stuff.... I think the rest of your system
might be just enough to enjoy the game without going overboard on eyecandy.
find your self even just a gforce2 mx card (they aren't to high) and you
should all of a sudden be much more happy.

I personally recommend Hercules, 64 meg mx4oo if you can spring for it, but
even my mx32meg version runs on my 850 mhz p3 around 40-55fps in car,
dropping down to 35 or so, in heavy (Bristol crappy wreck races) traffic and
some times less if high traffic and a spin...  Im usually online and only
like 9 cars within view after the start so FPS stay up there...  short
tracks with lot of players and wrecks really are where you really need the
expensive card...  that is if you wish to see yourself get wrecked out
without stuttering framerates (IMHO mute point)...

Lose the vidcard Doug.  Big bottleneck in that system.
