best video card for a PII450Mhz?

by Arturo Veg » Sun, 26 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi, I need some help. I currently have a PII 450Mhz, 128MB, with a Monster
3D II 12MB and a normal ATI AGP (Hercules Rendition Thriller AGP is getting
some dust somewhere due to incompatibility with the pc-DVD). I want to
upgrade the videocard but I don't know what is the best choice out there
right now, or even if it's a good time to buy or to wait for upcoming cards?

Is the Voodoo3 3500 better than TNT2 in general?
What about a model from Matrox, I read about one model (don't remember it
now) that seemed to be great, perhaps better than the V3 or TNT2...

What I'm looking for is higher frame rates, with better picture quality than
Monster 3D II, reasonable price, S-video out (good video out capabilities).

For playing: GPL, Nascar 3, Rally Championship 2K, SCGT, TOCA2, MGPRS2
(almost all or all in 3dfx mode?). Want to play new F1 2000 and NFS PU on
it.

Thanks!
Arturo

The Geforce cards with the Nvidia chipset  are where it is at.  Stay away from
3dfx cards they are a dieing  breed.

Just recently I had to make same choice that you are doing. I have mostly
the same games too. When I replaced my Banshee I ended up going with a
Voodoo3 3000 simply becuase it does glide better than the other choices and
glide was required to run GPL in a satisfactory (to me ) fashion. Was
pleasantly surprised to realize that the V3 could run GPL in high resolution
as fast as the Banshee could run in low res.  All the other sims you mention
run OK( except MGPRS2 which i don't have: F1GPR is Ok though). Have not
tried the TV out function yet to see what it looks like.Price was about
C$225

Geforce?

Why would you buy a $250 card that is not even supported yet.  Sure you can
play a game with it, but it does not perform any better than a V3.

When games finally start utilizing the T&L that the GeForce can do, then it
will be worth it to buy one, and by then the prices will be down.

Dont pay $250 for a card that will not do any better than a V3 on current
games, wait til the prices drop

I would wait for the V4 and V5. The V3 2000 that I have is great for GPL,N3
etc but I will be waiting at the door when the new ones arrive. The Voodoo
crasser also well supported for advice etc
