I don't think it was a NASCAR driver.  I'm pretty sure it was a
Prototype event.  All though I can't think of the drivers name.  I do
remember the "McDonalds Loop" being placed there just because of that during
the early or mid eighties just shy of the first NASCAR event.  Don't quote
me 100% though.  I remember walking up to the turn shortly after the crash.

A WGI fanatic that can quote every and all historical facts about WG as
well as just about any other track and racing series told me that the
fastest "Unofficial" top speed on that strait was 244Mph and officially was
23xMph.

I think a NASCAR driver did die there and well a prototrype driver was
serverly injured.  Tommy Kendall in the GTP Chevy Intrepid if my memory
serves correct on the prototype driver who got hurt there.

From the North American Motorsports Pages website:......
http://www.na-motorsports.com/

A chicane known as the "Inner Loop" was added in the early 1990s after the
tragic death of NASCAR Winston Cup driver J. D. McDuffie in a Turn 5
accident; this chicane was added on the right side of the back straightaway,
just before the entrance to "The Loop". It is numbered as 4 distinct turns
(Turns 5, 6, 7, and 8), although it is generally taken as two turns. When
the chicane is used, 4 is added to the turn numbers for all subsequent turns
on the course.
