I an get my Origional GUs to work if I drop the speed of my
  Pentium to 16mhz

Its short choppy sound if its 75mhz & anything over 75mhz is no sound
what so ever - Yes it sounds good.

I can select GUs from the Sound Menu & enter the irq etc settings
  into the boxes OK

I can't offer any advice - my ultrasound just worked (settings 240, IRQ 11, DMA 3)
first time with absoultly no trouble at all.
The only thing that I can think of is - are your drivers up to date?

Simon,
Just to eliminate the obvious... Are you running under Win95?  If
you are you will likely have to configure the sound card from DOS-mode and
not from within a Win95 Dos box.  If you are a Win95 user, try restarting in
DOS mode and running the setup program to configure the card.  Once its
configured properly it should work under Win95 as well as DOS.  If you're
in the Win95 environment I don't know what the problem could be.
